Astros get White Sox RHP Matt Heidenreich, LHP Blair Walters and a player to be named later in Myers deal

Right now it looks more like a salary dump and keeping Myers option from vesting with us. Unless the ptbnl is the big part of the trade, the 2 we got aren't a whole lot to.get excited about.

Stros getting ready for next year. I can see them overpaying for Hamilton and/or Bourn this coming off season.

'Stros are 3+ years away from competing.

...and that process can be accelerated if they sign some free agents. They certainly have the money and barely anything on this cap for next season. Their starting payroll for next season will be around 40 million.

Locking big money into a free agent this offseason would be a terrible idea.
Signing Mike Bourn to a huge contract woulsnt accelerate anything. They'd still be a terrible team. They're not one player away, and one player, no matter how good, won't make them a contender.

Not to mention you don't build a team around Michael fricking Bourn
Posted on 7/21/12 at 3:47 pm to msutiger
Exactly
And you don't just spend money to spend money.
When the prospects the 'Stros are piling up start to come up to the big league level, then you supplement them with some FA veterans. Not next fricking year just because you have the money to do so.

Never said they were close to being a contender in the first place.
You're right on one thing here, signing Michael Bourn would still make them a terrible team. However they are flexible to sign multiple... and while it may not make them contenders, it does accelerate the process.

This would only make sense if they were spending money just to spend money. They would be spending money to get better.
Sitting on that money and doing nothing with it would be stupid. It's not like they can allocate the extra money towards future draft picks and international free agents anymore.
With the bare system that they have, if they're going to wait for some of their players to develop, they're looking to be cellar dwellers for a very long time.

Not to mention no one said you should build a team around Michael Bourn.

Not saying u build a club around him but that's not the worst idea in the world. Bourn might be the braves' MVP this year.

Dodgers apparently gaining interest in Garza. This could definitely mean that Lee ends up with the Cubs. Given that Garza is signed through next year, they would be able to have him for two playoff runs as opposed to just this season if they aquired Dempster. Also, to get a compensation pick in the next draft for a free agent departure, that player has to be on your roster for the entire season, which again they would not get with Dempster. If Garza left after next season due ot FA, the Dodgers would gain a compensation pick, so they are definitely going to have to give up a lot more.
Garza did just get pulled from a start after three innings due to injury, but it appeared to just be cramping.

Definitely a key component. Excellent table setter with Gold Glove defense. Bringing him back would be a great start.

Signing a big name free agent this offseason would be borderline retarded for the Astros. It won't speed up any process and may help them lose 95 games instead of 100.
Bourn isn't going to effect the development of any prospect in A or AA ball. He won't speed up the winning process. He may fizzle in the later part of the contract when the prospects start coming up, and then the Astros will be stuck paying a player big money past his prime. See Carlos Lee.

Q off the trade market.

Your comprehension skills are lacking.

And keeping money while putting a poor product on the field isn't going to help prospects develop either. Bourn is 29 years old and he's not Albert Pujols. No one is going to give him a 10 year deal. A 5 year deal should suffice. A combination of players will speed up the winning process... not just Michael Bourn.
Try understanding the post first... it'll do wonders for your responses.

Angels and Rays discussing deal.
The Los Angeles Angels have been linked to the starting pitching market for weeks and Saturday ESPN Insider's Jim Bowden tweets of a rumor swirling about at Angel Stadium.
Bowden says the Angels would send right-handers Garrett Richards and John Hellweg, and second baseman Howard Kendrick to the Tampa Bay Rays for right-hander James Shields and infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist. Other pieces may be involved if the deal comes to fruition, but it's mere conversation at this stage, Bowden notes.
The Rays would be acquiring a younger arm in Richards, a prospect within a year or two of the majors in Hellweg and a signed Kendrick. Zobrist and Shields are also signed -- through 2014, if you include the clubs options for Shields, and through 2015 including options for Zobrist.
It appears to be a nearly sideways deal, with the Angels acquiring some more versatility in Zobrist and reliability in Shields.
Stay tuned, the Angels aren't the only club that likes Shields, and this may get crazy before anything pops.

I have no clue why the Rays would want that deal. Makes no sense.
