We're 8-10 games into the season, which means everybody is at least 10% of the way through the year, so we can start making baseless assumptions on how each division race will shake up based on a small sliver of play. Let's over-react!

ATLANTIC
The Habs are 8-0-1 which I'm sure is totally sustainable. The Habs give up way too many shots, which would be a concern if Carey Price didn't play for them. What's amazing is that Montoya has been just as good. Nearly everyone is clustered around 500 with the Red Wings ahead of the pack due to games played. The one team lagging behind is poor Toronto, at 2-4-3. They started the year brilliantly, and their underlying stats are pretty great, but they are getting killed by some wretched goaltending. Neither starter is above an 876 save%. Yikes.

METRO
Four teams are playing above a point per game pace: the Pens, the Caps, the Rangers, and the DEVILS?! Only 34 goals have been scored in a Devils game this year. By contrast, the Rangers have scored 35 goals on their own. Watching Devils hockey is like being trapped in the Dead Puck Era for eternity. They must be stopped, for the good of humanity. The Pens have a negative goal differential despite being 6-2-1 and the Caps can't score, but boast the NHL's best defense despite averaging over 33 shots per game. The goals will start coming for both of them eventually.

CENTRAL
The Stars and Preds are getting near the point at which they are truly screwed. It's a terrific division anyway, and they are a combined 5-9-2. They can't lose contact, because this division will put you away in a hurry. Meanwhile, the Wild are one of the teams putting them away. They look awesome so far.

PACIFIC
All hail our Oiler overlords! This is a pretty bad division anyway, so the Oilers holding a 5-point lead over the 3rd place Canucks is huge right now. The Ducks and the Kings are hanging near the bottom of the division, but it's too early to panic, given that they're chasing the Canucks. And I'm not sure, but I think the Coyotes have already been mathematically eliminated.

+1

Stars are extremely beat up right now. Eakin, Hemsky, Sharp, Janmark, Spezza have all missed games with a few of those out long term and with no guarantee that Hemsky nor Janmark return this season. I think they had 6 skaters out a few games ago. Been pretty frustrating so far in that regard. That and the fact their PP sucks but that's another issue altogether.

I was thinking best case scenario would be Dallas playing .500 through November to let these minor injuries clear up and then get Eakin back hopefully by December, but it isn't like he is a game changer even when he returns (he is much needed depth though). So I have no clue what to expect from Stars hockey going forward.

From a Caps site, they dressed their toddler as Tom Wilson in the penalty box, which is adorable.

I had to slap myself a couple times. 100% of the time it's the Jackets pissing away a game late.

I know. I thought they were getting lazy on that power play then they finally got organized, got one good shot and bam...momentum.

Anyone else think this Philly/Detroit game has a weird camera angle? It feels like I'm watching an outdoor game.

Tell me I'm not the only one watching this instead of the World Series.
