I shite you not, I'd go into full Godzilla on Japan mode if we signed Choo. I think he's a terrible signing. 100+ million dollars for Shin Soo fricking Choo?

Choo is an excellent player, may not be in 7 years, but he's a good bit better than Ellsbury to me

I wouldn't go that far as Choo may regress into a platoon player and Ellsbury plays a premium position

7 years is way too much.
Choo is more of a win now signing to me and IMO, would veer off the path they're trying to take.
I don't like it either.

I just don't think he's that great of a player to commit 7 years and 150 million dollars. He gets on base a lot but a lot of this Max contract talk comes from what he did last year. .423 OBP was by far his highest boasted by a pronounced career high 112 walks. Things change when hitting in front if Joey Votto. The numbers look better. Not interested unless Joey Votto is coming with him.

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I like the OF right now.
I'm sure it's probably set in stone that Springer will spend the first month in AAA, but I do like Grossman, Fowler, Hoes until then. I'm fine with that.
I think Grossman is going to be a VERY good option at the 9 hole. Springer will come up and replace Hoes and move Grossman to RF. Fowler isn't playing anywhere but CF. Porter already mentioned that. I wouldn't expect him to be anywhere else.
They're addressing this bullpen right now and now all we have to do is wait on Cosart, Peacock, and Oberholtzer to continue to improve. Obviously not a contending team right now, but there's no doubt in my mind that they will be an improved ball club next year. Will finish in last in the West because the West is ridiculously deep right now.

Grossman is a bit of mystery. He's got a rep in the minor leagues as a guy who's no stranger to taking walks. He has over 100 walks in the season we got him.
When he first came up, he struggled with the bat (.198) but still had 16 walks in 28 games. That's a 93 walk pace over 162 games.
When he came back, he hit a lot better (.322) but his walks fell off the map. He had just 7 over 20 something games. 33 walk pace foe 162 games. Despite the decline in walks if he can hit like he did at the end of the year, he can contribute.

Looks to me that they told him to look for walks. In the end, you're stuck with having to swing late in the count and you end up struggling.
Call him back up and tell him to swing at the pitches they give him and end up hitting over .300

so long as he's facing a right hander. His splits are bad. Which i think easilty keeps him out of the 'excellent' category.

.317/.457/.554 against righties

First of all the studies have show that hitter protection is a myth.
Second of all explain the reasoning why people would walk choo with Votto coming up?

Because Votto sucks and is worse than Brandon Phillips duh

which is why I said

do you want to put the lefty stats up?

I know, but you're underestimating how good he was against right handers. Only Chris Davis and David Ortiz were better against righties
He was .215/.347/.265 against lefties. Not good

I just don't understand spending that kind of money on Choo now.
I mean are you gonna block Singleton at 1st for 7 years, or spend 140 million on a designated hitter?
Just doesn't make sense.

no, i know he's very good against righties. But he's not an excellent player becuase of his attrocious numbers against leftys.

I don't think it would be a "bad" contract for the astros. I think they can talk it down from 7/140. The astros have tons of money and cap space. As long as they don't have to give up prospects.
Which I'm not sure what pick they would have to give up for choo because their #1 pick is protected.

They would have to give up their supplemental pick in the early 30s they received from Baltimore in the Norris trade.

Andre Ethier and Ryan Howard are a good bit worse against lefties and much worse overall yet they make $17.5MM and $25MM.
Hell I think Choo would be worth $20MM next year only playing against righties and sitting against lefties.
