Lots of Caps moves. I like ‘em taken as a group. Here’s the summary:
Traded a worthless draft pick for the rights to Troy Brouwer
Re-signed Brooks Laich to over-market value deal
Overpaid for Joel Ward to add toughness and playoff grit.
Signed Jeff Halpern to replace Boyd Gordon, who left as a FA
Signed Roman Hamrlik to replace Scott Hannan, who was allowed to walk
Traded disgruntled goalie Varly for draft picks to build for the future
Signed Vokoun for a deal so outrageously small that people are calling for his agent to be fired
Essentially, the Caps traded Gordon, Hannan, and Varly for Halpern, Hamrlik, Vokoun, and draft picks. Gordon for Halpern is a wash, Hamrlik is a huge upgrade over Hannan, who I simply despise after these playoffs and couldn’t wait for him to leave. Vokoun over Varly is another massive upgrade. These moves are full of win, even if they put too much money down for Ward and Laich (which I think they had to).
All in all, a very successful week. I still think the Caps should trade Semin for a first-line center, allowing them to move Backstrom on the second line. I know many want to trade Green, but he’s now a second line D, where he excels, and his concussion problems and contract probably make him untradeable. I’d be looking to package Schultz and Semin for a true star center. Maybe throw in Perrault in that deal. If you can’t get a first line center for that package, then something is wrong.
Sign Brouwer and Alzner is priority one. Then trade for a center. Maybe call the Stars about Ribiero, San Jose for Pavelski, or Minnesota for Koivu.

Tomas Kaberle agrees to 3 yr, $12.75 deal with Carolina.
Per Bruce Garrioch and Kirk - Joe Corvo to Bruins for a 4th

The Flames are sniffing around Stamkos and are expected to put in an offer sheet if he doesn't sign to force the Bolts hand. It also seems like Richards' second choice was Calgary, and they were the other bidder. They want a stud scorer. Since choking in the postseason is no biggee for the Flames, I'm trying to come up with a Caps-Flames trade that benefits both teams. so how about this?
Semin + Erskine/Schultz for
Stajan + Borque/Glencross
The Flames add a RW, which they desperately need behind Iggy, and another superstar scorer, which they also desperately need. They then add another blueliner to replace the loss of Regher.
The Caps get a decent C to plug on the 2nd or 3rd line (there's no chance the Flames give up Backlund and the Caps won't take Joker). They then get a LW, which the Flames have in abundance. The Caps clear some salary and can resign Alzner and Brouwer, and still have cap flexibility to keep Fehr and Chimera on the roster. And I'd go nuts if GlenX was in a Caps jersey. Absolutely friggin' nuts. I love that guy.

agreed. canes overpaid for Kaberle. and Corvo only has one year left on his deal so we saved a ton of money. Got a lot of UFA's and RFA's of our own to sign next year.

Kaberle didn't have that bad of a post season stats wise. He was over scrutinized after Claude put him on the first power play line.

agree. he actually had a very good final. just don't want him for $4.25 mil/year.

All I know is that if the Caps plan on trading Semin, they better be bringing in some offense to make up for his lost production. No matter which way you want to cut it, he at least keeps defenses honest. Our 2nd line would be toothless if Semin is traded and there isn't something done to replace him. You've got to think Kuznetsov will eventually replace him, but until then, there really isn't anyone there to provide the 2nd lethal punch.
On the other hand, our 3rd and 4th lines are going to rival anyone's in the league. I'm still not set on the defense. The Caps are going to have to move someone, and my guess is Schultz. Keep Erskine around, at least he shows some grit and courage in the playoffs. Schultz brings absolutely nothing to the table. He might be suitable for the 3rd pairing, but even then he is a huge pylon.
Do a little more to shore up the defense this offseason, and if you trade Semin, bring something back to replace him on the 2nd line. But yes, our goaltending is officially set.
I like the Calgary proposals, but I'm hoping GMGM can somehow pull a trade for Weiss. Oh and I think Fehr/Chimera have to be on the cutting room floor with the additions of Ward and Brouwer. And you've got to think Eakin might make it on the 4th line this year.

Actually, I think our D is now possibly the best corps in the league:
Alzner/Carlson with a year under their belt
Green/Hamrlik
Wideman/Erskine (assuming Schultz gets traded)
That's an obscenely deep and talented blueline, and Green will no longer have to carry a slow-footed partner in Schultz or Erskine. Also, Wideman can slide up to the top pair on PP's. Green and Hamrlik seem like they were built to play together.
Honestly, Semin is the part that needs to go. I'd love to add a center (or re-sign Arnott), but the Caps could stand to re-org their lines. As of now it's:
Ovie-Backs-Knuble
Brouwer-MoJo-Semin
Chimera-Laich-Fehr
Hendricks/Beagle-Halpern-Ward
If you dump Semin for two decent wingers, sure, the 2nd line takes a hit. but if you can dump Semin, your 2nd line goes to decent, but you can put the other winger on the 4th line and send Hendricks/Beagle back to the AHL. You then have four lines all capable of scoring. Take my suggested trade with the Flames....
You could insert Glencross on the second line, put Stajan on the 3rd line, and drop Laich to the wing on your 4th line, which would now be your 3rd line. That would be a team that has extraordinary depth. Sure, you don't have a 30-goal scorer on the second line, but now you could have two potential 20-goal scorers on the 2nd line, and a potential 20-goal scorer on both your 3rd and 4th lines.

The forward lines I just can't figure out until the other shoe drops. There HAS to be moves made, they are only about 500,000 under the cap right now, granted they can be over 10 percent during the summer, but still something will have to happen during training camp. Semin's contract makes the most sense to move. We'll see if Poti and Fehr go on the ltir.
Going back to the defense though, lets say Schultz is packaged with some filler and brings back a vet dman, then yes I'll start getting pumped about the defense. If Erskine can just get moved to the 7th option, we're going to be sitting pretty on defense. Orlov will probably have a good showing at training camp and is close to making the jump.
Kuz, Eakin, and Orlov are so close to making the team. Also, if Colorado fails this season like they did this past season, we're looking at a top 5 player who will probably jump up in a year or two. Things look bright, but the coaching still bothers me and that defense just looks shaky to me right now along with the lack of a real 2nd line center. Guess we'll see what shakes down. Oh and it's awesome that Vokoun can basically mentor Neuvy while Olie can really mentor Holtby.

#NHL signing. #Leafs lock up Clarke Mac Arthur. A 2 year deal believed to be worth 6.5M.
RealKyper Nick Kypreos
No #NHL offer sheet for Stamkos. Its believed #Lightning have closed in and formal announcement could be looming. Last offer was @ 37M x 5

Looks like we're trying to become the Wild. What's the word on Havlat? I understand that he is fast and a scorer, hopefully he can help us out.

Havlat's a lot cheaper from what I understand. He's not the goal scorer Heatley is(or was
I suppose SJ thinks Heatley is on the decline.
