Go ahead and give him the Calder.

You are aware of the existence of Tomas Hertl, right? Or even Torey Krug, another blueliner who has 5 more goals, and 2 more assists than Maata?

Or MacKinnon, who I still think will win it, though it is early.

Canadiens got their arse completely kicked tonight.

The Jim Mora speech immediately comes to mind.

If Subban and Markov are supposed to be the best defense pair in the conference, then they sure as hell didnt show it tonight

Yeah go ahead and give it to Maatta.

Unreal. 19 years old, budding superstar already.

I knew he was good but got damn thought he was another 1-2 years away.

Who needs Paul Martin(25 games and counting), Rob Scuderi(30 games and counting), James Neal, Tomas Vokoun(All season), Beau Bennett(30 games and counting)?

Being healthy is overrated, especially defensively with a backup AHL goalie and 19 year old rookie defenseman.

Since when is Beau Bennett a impact player?

And as for the Calder Race the one guy no one is talking about is Eric Gelinas in NJ.

2nd in points among rookie defenseman. Averaging 19 mins a game. His Corsi% is at 56.5% which is crazy and a CorsiRelative% of +2.6%.

All of those numbers are better than Maatta. Krug is better than both going by defenseman. The trophy is Hertl's to lose.

The Pens, LA Kings and Boston are the hottest teams in the NHL right now.

I usually DVR the LA games since they are on late in this time zone, and put on some coffee early in the a.m. and watch before work. They completely dominated SJ last night. In the absence of injured G Jonathan Quick, Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens have been excellent. On current form the Kings are Cup contenders.

Going to my second NHL game ever tonight. Hurricanes vs Capitals.
Are the Hurricanes any good this year?
Is Alex Ovechkin still one of the best players in the NHL?

Have fun! They legitimately hate each other!

Yes and no. Everyone in the East sort of sucks, so that means the Canes are a probable playoff team.

Yes. He's playing absurdly great now. He's near pace to score 50 goals in 50 games (he has scored 48 in his past 50). Any other player in history to do that has done it in a high-scoring era, which we are not in. He's making a case as the greatest pure goal scorer in NHL history.

The funny thing is that finishing second in the Metro will get a team an easier draw than finishing first. The Caps defense has been God awful this year (look at those goals allowed!), and they're on pace to be rewarded with an easier first round opponent than the Pens, who are running away with the division. The Pens will almost certainly get the 4th or 5th place team in the Atlantic (as of today, Detroit and Toronto) while the Caps, if they hold on to second which is no sure thing, would get the #3 Metro team (today, that is the Flyers).

If the Pens win the division and draw the Red Wings in the first round, I will laugh for three solid days.

Avs need two points tonight against the Oilers. If not, Patrick's going to be pissed along with me.

Great win for the Avs last night. That fake slapshot pass from Mackinnon to O'Reilly was beautiful. Sometimes it doesn't seem fair to have 2 guys as quick as Duchene and Mackinnon on the same line.

This is random but I wish Dallas would wear their away unis all the time...the white away unis look a lot better than the green home ones IMO

Given they win more games on the road, I would give it a try. Like the "supersition" beer commercials say, it's only weird if it doesn't work.

They finally found the secret to winning--have the owner show up. Gagliardi has been at the last two games and they've won both.

Speaking of the Olli Maatta pain train...now gets his dues! LINK

quote:

NEW YORK -- It's unlikely Pittsburgh Penguins rookie defenseman Olli Maatta ever imagined he would be one of the team's most veteran defensemen at any point this season. But injuries to Pittsburgh's top four blueliners have suddenly forced Maatta into that very situation.

And he's making the transition look easy.

The 19-year-old easily topped his career high for minutes in Pittsburgh's 4-3 shootout victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. His 28:06 topped his previous high of 24:17, which he set in a 3-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs two nights earlier.

Maatta found himself in every situation Wednesday alongside defensive partner Matt Niskanen. That included the key defensive assignment of going against the Rangers' top line of Derek Stepan, Rick Nash and Chris Kreider.

"The role is bigger. He's playing against the other team's best players right now. We're seeing him in a big penalty kill role as well. He's certainly been up to the task," said Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, who said he isn't terribly surprised by the rookie's emergence. "He's a 19-year-old kid, but he certainly hasn't played like it at all in the first 36 games. His minutes are going up because of the injuries we have, but the consistency with which he plays has not changed. That's been there since training camp."

Just crazy how many injuries that Pens have had defensively and are 5th in SV% and 4th in Goals allowed per game.

Too early to be predicting that, Flyers have the 8 seed at the moment. Lolz.

If the Pens get home ice throughout, it's GG, cya in the Finals western conference.

Looooove this team, have that '09 feel.

Top three teams from each division qualify and are seeded 1-3 in the divisional playoffs this year. They changed the playoff format.
