It was a great match until the last set when Rafa just took over. I'm a fan of both those dudes. Congrats to Rafa.

I like em both, but Rafa slightly more. The first three sets were real good. I thought Novak had the third, but when Rafa came back it was clear that broke Novak and it was done.
4 more majors to tie RF. I think he can get to it with two, maybe three, more French Opens.

I watched this match, and to me, the joker was really nervous from the get go. In the second set, Rafa started playing that stupid slice that I HATE, playing not to lose, not being aggressive enough, and the joker took advantage of that. Joker pushed him around, and got confident.
In the third, when the joker was pushing Rafa so much, that he was literally in his butt a couple of times, down 0-40 about to lose the set (a break at that point would have been fatal), Rafa got pissed and got aggressive again. Holding that game mentally destroyed Djokovic. He just realized Rafa was going to win, and there was nothing he could do about it, or so he thought.
Rafa is the GOAT. No doubt in my mind. Nobody has the desire to win, and compete every single point, and the physical ability to sustain a ridiculous level of play, with very little mistakes like he does. Tennis is 90% mental, and he is the best. Roger is better with the 10%
I agree with all of the above.
I've written it about three different times in this thread now, but the tennis Djokovic was playing in the second set and then the third set (up until the game mentioned in the above-quoted where Djokovic was up 40-0 on Nadal's serve and failed to break him) was just exquisite. Nadal will go down historically as a far superior tennis player than Djokovic, but I have to give Novak a lot of credit. When he is in the zone, he can outclass Nadal. I mean, just completely dictating the points as if he has Rafa on a string. And, no, he hasn't shown that he can sustain that level of play over an entire match. But he'll go on an 8-10 game run of just virtuoso shotmaking, that you kind of just have to sit back and appreciate. And this is coming from a diehard Rafa fan.

bobby got any tennis bets today?

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but yes. I have a few plays on matches in Challenger Events. There are a slew of Challengers going on right now. One in Istanbul, one in Morocco, Luxembourg, Spain and Colombia.
I went in on Devvarman and lost. But then I won on Berankis and Petzchner. Not sure if I'll go in on any others today.

I love Rafa, always have above all, but I appreciate good tennis, so I love Roger, and I love when Djokovic plays ridiculous, beautiful tennis. I don't like the joker sometimes, when he bitches about conditions after a match he lost (this year's French semis). And when he goes over the top using the crowd to his advantage. The whole tearing up my shirt after the Australian was in bad taste, specially after a marathon match like that. But I appreciate what he brings to tennis.
I agree, when Djokovic is ON, he is truly the best. But he is mentally weak, except for his run in 2011, that he had magical gluten free thinking going on. Once he realized he is still beatable, we got we we got this year, the old Djokovic- outstanding tennis player, but fragile mentally.
Honestly tennis right now, borders on the absurd. Some of the stuff these guys (and Serena/Vika) do is simply unreal. I can watch the top people play every single day.

If he was mentally tough, and had not been broken, he would have rolled from that point. Everyone was in awe of how well he was controlling every point of the 2nd and 3rd set. I thought he had it, but he just couldn't keep it.
It'll be interesting to see if the next group of players after Fed/Nadal/Djokovic can play at the same level or if we'll see a drop in performance.
Posted on 9/10/13 at 6:05 pm to GreenTrout
My guess is that there will be a drop. The reason they are so outstanding IMO is that they push each other, and they have incredible work ethic. Will the young guys have the same work ethic? Honestly, guys like Gulbis, Tomic, and pretty boy/ baby Fed (Sharapova's boyfriend)- I forget his name, I don't see them with the same mentality. Maybe they will develop it in time. Raonic seems like a serious guy, but he has movement limitations.
We shall see, the reign will come to an end in 2-3 yrs. Rafa, Andy, and Djokovic are going to start getting old. Federer is clearly in descent.

We'll see a drop just like we saw a drop after Sampras retired and Agassi was getting up in years. None of the current crop of youngsters have the potential to play on the level that Nadal and Djokovic are playing at right now.
That isn't to say they're scrubs, but they are a step below. Grigor Dimitrov is a nice player but will never play tennis at the level it was played last night. Nishikori lacks the weapons. Milos Raonic simply sucks at the game of tennis. Janowicz has the talent, but lacks the fire in his belly.
I'm really really hoping that in the next year or two some 17 year old kid will come out of nowhere just like Rafa did in 2004. The pundits these days say that the game is too physical for a teenager to step on the scene and be immediately great, but that's hogwash. Rafa did it. Sampras did it. Chang did it. Agassi did it. Johnny Mac and Borg did it back in the day. Boris Becker did it. Delpo did it. And Becker, Sampras, Delpo and Rafa were full grown, strong men when they burst on the scene. It isn't impossible for an 18 year old kid to be physically developed (See James, Lebron).
So I know that a 17 or 18 year old kid CAN burst on the scene from out of nowhere. I just hope that kid is out there, and that he DOES burst on the scene.

As a Rafa fan, when he goes to that slice it makes me

I tend to agree, but he was getting his slice really deep into the court last night. Usually he leaves it sitting there at the service line like a fricking christmas present, but last night I was actually impressed with the way he was hitting it.
ETA: all that said, he should still hit the slice as infrequently as possible. His crosscourt topspin backhand is just straight up disgusting. He'll go corner to corner with that shot any ole day of the week.

Yea when he gets it deep enough it's a decent change of pace, but he falls back on too much. Especially when you factor in the fact that:

I don't understand why he's never fully embraced this shot. It's like he falls back on the mindset from his early years when it was a weakness. He's turned it onto one of the better weapons in today's game.
Helluva season Rafa! Please stay healthy Rafa. Can't wait to see this duel in person at the Australian Open in January

Yea I'm pretty pumped. I don't know shite about photography, but I'm getting a decent camera for Xmas since I'll be doing so much traveling so hopefully I'll be able to get some decent action shots.

I hear the setup down there is pimped out. Like really nice grounds and facilities and all that jazz.

The slice is OK occasionally, but I think over using it, like he sometimes does is a sign that he is in a defensive mindset. Which is fine against the average player, but not against the other top 4 (Andy, Djoko, and perhaps Delpo, and Roger). He definitely under uses his two hander, which is a SICK shot.
Regardless, kudos to the joker, nice post game interview, very classy.
Interesting article explaining how Djoker was attacking Rafa, and how Rafa identified the attack, and got out of it. The joker was attacking the forehand first, with his forehand. Kind of surprising to me.
How did he do it (for tennis nerds)

Djokovic dominated the ensuing 54-shot rally, hitting 14 backhands and 13 forehands, forcing Nadal to hit 18 backhands and only nine forehands before Nadal finally netted a half volley backhand standing inside the baseline in the deuce court. Nadal ran 472.5 feet to Djokovic’s 424.7 feet in the point and Djokovic floated on the energy from the crowd for well over an hour.
I disagree with that. Nadal may have run more, but he almost won the point outright on about four consecutive shots that Djokovic barely got to.
