Some of those pitches that were called balls had been called strikes at other times. And vise/versa with balls called strikes. But when the pitching is so off, then I don't think the ump gives the benefit of the doubt as much.
It's an impossible situation for the pitchers. In a tied game in the bottom of the 9th, you can't just lob one over the middle (unless it's a 3-0 count with bases loaded you stupid relief pitcher). The 3rd batter of the inning that walked on 4 straight pitches right after the pitcher struck someone out was ridiculous. It was probably the first time all game that the corners, both inside and outside, were actually hit and should have been strikes with any ump behind the plate.
And this blind bastard behind the plate called them balls. You can talk about the submarine guy who kept braking the balls into the dirt, but the pitcher that was in at that time threw 2 perfect corner strikes and the ump screwed him out of them to walk the batter.
Texas wasn't going to win the game swinging the bat. Even when USM put it right over the middle of the plate, they could hardly do a damn thing with it. Once Texas had a runner on from a HBP (which I never saw a replay of and the batter made no effort to move a damn centimeter from what I remember, something that has been called back 2-3 times already this CWS), it was over because the strike zone was impossible. The ump didn't have a clue.
