2000 final bcs

I just had the website up, but it was razor thin between FSU and Miami. UW really had no chance in the final standings...by the numbers at least.

The computer score

From 1998 - 2003 the computer was out of whack in importance. And then half dropped out, and they couldn't decide on which one...and then they picked up some half-arse ones...and none of it was transparent. It was a joke...still sort of is but it was really bad bad 10 years ago.

Agree. It's amazing that with the innovation in this country a transparent, sensible algorithm cannot be put in place. I thought I read one of the current formulas uses is the creation of some dude who doesn't even have a degree and admittedly don't know anything about stats.

I'd like to see that if you do so.

I'll give it shot and turn it over to the stats majors for tweeks.

I can't find the vote count for the Dec Coaches poll. It's actually really hard it seems.

Other than that I think I set up a decent excel sheet.

I may have to come back to this.

Didn't Udub beat Miami and finish with 1 loss?

Yea. You can easily argue that they were hosed too, but FSU should not of been in there. Out of those 3 teams. FSU is the only without a win over one of the others. But they were the defending champs so that prolly played a huge part in it

The computer score and strength of schedule killed Oregon.

I'd be curious if you converted the final 2001 standings to the current formula if it would have been different. You'd have to look up the total votes in both polls and change the math on the way the computers are scored. I gotta get back to work but maybe this afternoon I'll give it a shot.

That would be awesome to see.

Definitely post when/if you think you've got it figured out.

I really am amazed less people talk about how badly Oregon got screwed in 2001. Would Miami have won? Probably. But who knows? The point is, UO deserved the shot.

This just illustrates why we need a 4 team playoff.

I thought after 2004 (when Auburn was shut out) that things would change. I figured an undefeated SEC team would be the catalyst that got us a 4 or 8 team playoff.

I vastly underestimated the thick headedness of the rest of the conferences. Only when an all SEC title game came to be (along with 6 straight SEC titles) did they suddenly see any wisdom in allowing more than 2 teams to have a chance at the title.
