If Kazmir pitches more than 20 innings this year, it would be a win.
I dont think anyone actually thinks he is going to play for the Braves, and honestly, the Braves dont need him.
Need Gohara or Fried in the 5th spot
Need Fried, Gohara, or Sims in the long reliever position.
Young guys need to play. Not 34 year old, injury prone guys. We've got enough prospects. Dont need to play someone just to trade them for a prospect at the deadline. The team is past that stage.

Has anyone else become frustrated with the franchise? At the end of the ‘14 season, I was in agreement the the farm system needed to be replenished. But the direction leaves a lot to be desired IMO.
- The FO put nearly ALL of their eggs in one basket with pitching. And while we do have the best farm (which is great) nearly all of the top prospects are arms. And we all know how volatile pitching prospects are. There are some concerns with some our young “building blocks of the future rotation......Newk has serious walk issues, Gohara has some (although I believe Gohara will be fine), and Soroka (whom I really like) will be highly dependent on control because he doesn’t have TOR stuff.
- The FO all but abandoned position players in the draft (especially in the early rounds). Their stated goal was to load up on pitching prospects in order to trade for bats. Well now around the league, you are seeing that the value of pitching prospects is down, in part because they flame out at such a high rate.
- So due to this, we have 5,000 pitchers to go along with a very serious lack of impact position prospects.
- We have ONE true impact bat in the System in Acuña. We have a possible long term answer at 3rd in Riley, but there are real concerns with his bat speed........which could prove detrimental once he faces advanced pitching in the show. I do have hope for him though.
- There is a BLACK HOLE in the system regarding near term LF options. There have been NUMEROUS teams identified as having OF surpluses (with pitching needs), and it has been crickets from the FO. There are guys like Clint Frazier and Brett Phillips who are blocked on their prospective teams......and each of these guys has nice upside.
- The cost to acquire players via FA or trade, was pretty down this offseason. Sitting on your hands just to “see what we have” is not prudent........it’s idiotic. With next years FA class set to be the best in a generation.......the cost of acquiring players will be SIGNIFICANTLY higher next offseason.
- I have seen on other message boards that fans should be fine with punting away ANOTHER season without trying to improve the club.......because they are trying to clear money to target Harper or Machado next offseason. Give me a damn break
the franchise is saying that they don’t want to hit 120 million for this year........and you think they are going to commit 30-40 million AAV to ONE player!
- The fact that they are concerned with going over 120 should be a cause for concern for fans as well. The franchise cried and moaned for a new stadium to bring in extra revenue, and rooked the tax payers for a shite ton of money to get the stadium. They added a significant amount revenue, and are now worried about adding payroll?
- I was definitely on board with rebuilding, but there are A LOT of reasons to be concerned with the way things have gone. I love prospects, but that’s what they are PROSPECTS. If you have opportunities to acquire young, controllable, position players that have already shown flashes that they can handle the show (and still have upside) ie Clint Frazier and Brett Phillips..........you need to make those deals.
- My fear is that a significant amount of the pitching prospects will not progress this year (or regress), and we will be left with less prospect capital to make a trade next offseason. Then the franchise will make more excuses to punt away yet ANOTHER year of Freddie’s prime.
- I hope that this works out......but there is definitely cause for concern.
Hell I didn’t even touch on Dansby’s problems. Lol

Yeah, though I'm willing to give Anthopoulos a year or two, I'm sincerely disappointed in the obvious lack of moving FORWARD last year and this year.
Baby steps ain't cutting it because, like most babies learning to walk, they'll take a step forward and then stagger backwards a couple. We need obvious and outward commitment from the franchise to move forward and we ain't gettin' it.

Anthopoulos is the guy I wanted them to get, in part because I believe he will bring a more balanced approach and hopefully go away from the “Braves way”
Evidently JS has asked him to wait before making moves because we all know Anthopoulos usually makes big moves.
What really frustrates me is that JS doesn’t learn and won’t get out of the damn way. As much as I loved the run from 91-05, with all of that pitching........we won ONE World Series. In part because we struggled scoring runs when it counted during some of the WS appearances and Playoff runs.
Yes pitching is important, but impact position players are MORE VALUABLE, this franchise has never realized this. You have to score runs to win, and right now Freddie is the ONLY position player in the entire organization that strikes fear into other pitchers. Acuña has the potential to be another impact bat........he and Freddie will still need another power threat to see pitches.

When the team is ready, they have the money to go sign the bats they will need. Right now, there’s no need to add a big bat. You should see up opening the check book out wide next season when we’re realistically going to be able to compete.

It really makes me fricking giggle that all of these people believe that LIBERTY MEDIA is going to spend a bunch of money on payroll next offseason
It must be awesome to be that naive

I just hope they are willing to spend at least a little more than they were before they stripped things down. Between new revenues from the new ballpark and inflation there’s no good reason they shouldn’t.

The 40 man payroll last year was at 133 mil. This years 40 man isnt set yet, but its probably going to be right around the same number. We did eat a lot of money to get free from that 2 year Kemp contract.
I dont expect us to be spending 175 mil in the future, but with the revenue coming from a new stadium, I see no reason it wont bump up to around 145 mil or so in the offseason since there are actually good players available that are worth money.
Posted on 2/26/18 at 11:32 am to devils1854
Not sure on all the details but we are shedding about 30 million in payroll next season just between Markakis, Kazmir, and McCarthy.
Posted on 2/26/18 at 11:38 am to RollDatRoll
Yeah we moved all that Kemp money to this season.
A Gonzales-22
Kazmir-17.6
McCarthy-11.5
Markakis-11
Flowers-4
Suzuki-3.5
We technically will only have 3 players under contract after this year, but that doesnt count all the young guys.

1 WAR is worth about 9 mil right now, so technically he probably would be worth it. Nice little bridge to Pache.

We are definitely adding an OF bat next year either in free agency or a trade. Austin Riley and Alex Jackson will decide what we do with 3B and catcher position next year. I think it is pretty much a guarantee we are gonna have to trade some of are young pitchers next year. Next year will be the biggest offseason the Braves will ever have.
