Had a get together for the fights so I will have to catch up on this thread. Thoughts from the night:
- Pat Barry looked strong. I wonder if Evenson tore an MCL. Good to see the local boy win.
- Good to see Matt Hammil win even though I find his fights to be pretty boring. Don't know if that's just me though.
- Kongo looked impressive. Didn't see much chatter on here about it. Don't know much about the guy he fought but Al Turk was supposedly BJJ based. Kongo showed pretty good takedown defense which is a vast improvement from a year ago. I did want to see him on the ground to see if he has progressed at all but if he can keep it standing he is dangerous. Guy is a freak. No clue who he fights next though.
- RAMPAGE BABY!!! Very impressive KO. I was actually more impressed with his technique when they showed it in slow-mo than I was with the shear force of his punches (they go hand in hand, I know). He was doing a great job of covering up while throwing that left hook. Lot of times you will see guys show this perfect technique in the gym but then it all goes to shite when they step in the cage. Wandy needs to move down to 185. I think he has shown that he can't hang with the UFC 205ers anymore. It would also add a much needed big name to that weight class.
- Nog looks like he has seen his best days come and go. I was shocked that he is only 32. I would have put money on 38. Not to take anything away from Mir though. He looked focused and ready and his stand up was impressive. Way too fast for Nog.
- Evans continues to impress. And I never would have thought a few years ago that he would have some of the more exciting endings to his fights. Looks like he is going away from his wrestling base and focusing on stand up which is ever improving. Forrest will probably be pissed when he watches this one on film and sees how lazy his guard was in the 3rd round. He had the first 2 in my opinion but Evans caught him and finished it nicely.
Overall a very good PPV. Not many of the fights went far at all but pretty much all of them were finished nicely.

It's good to see the Fedor nut-suckers here.
Couture's brain is mush. He looks like he's had so many concussions that he doesn't even know what's going on anymore. Wandy ain't too far behind, but still has such a hard-on for himself that he doesn't realize it. As of now, Brock Lesnar still does not have the skill, or smarts to easily defeat anyone, especially fighters like Frank Mir and Big Nog. He's still mostly raw talent and strength.

not close to raw in wrestling. he's an elite wrestler
you can win a lot of fights by simply being a good wrestler and using lay/pray. the UFC is built for wrestlers

right. he is a very advanced wrestler, has freak athleticism, and scary power in his hands. Yes, his standup is not overly technical, but his power makes him dangerous against anyone. His BJJ is very raw of course, but that's just one aspect of the sport.

Touche. Frank Mir's jitz should be enough to keep Brock careful on the ground though, and after last night..........I'd say Frank Mir is the more skilled boxer and has enough power to stun Lesnar. It should be a good fight. I'd give Brock another year of training and a couple more fights and he'll be unbeatable.........until a new Brock Lesnar comes in.

i still think mir beats him
i hope mir doesn't, but i still think lesnar is going to get subbed against most solid BJJ Guys

when MMA money gets to be legit, you'll see guys with his size/athleticism training from a young age

And I had started a topic earlier, but it got whacked. SmackDaniels, check out ufc-forums.com

i think the good bjj guy will also have to be stronger and more explosive than average (like Mir)....which seems to be a fairly rare combo.

Mir was getting absolutely raped against Brock when he pulled off that sub. If Frank wins, it will be the same way he won the first one. I'm going with Brock and to be honest I think he will have it for a long while before someone beats him. The better Lesnar gets with the BJJ the less of a chance anyone will have against him.

and?

Meaning Brock was beating him standing so if he keeps it standing he can win this time.

I still think Liddell beat Jardine. I know I am the only one that thinks that, but to me getting punched in the face is worse then getting kicked in the leg.
come on, now.
did you see how much damage those leg/body kicks were doing? Jardine even became the aggressor in a lot of fight because of it.

which begs the question, what the frick was nog doing? I mean after the first round he should have figured out he couldn't trade punches with mir. He did nothing to try and win the fight.

if he gets a top notch boxing coach and focuses on it he could be scary good

and we also have to wonder what kind of training mir will keep up. He is a cocky son of a bitch and we know he has had training problems in the past. Lesnar, on the other hand, is a fricking freak.

I think shock played into that. Nog's strategy was probably to keep it standing and when he relaized that Mir was killing him standing, he went into Oh shite mode.

Nobody has really tested his BJJ either because it is hard to get him on his back. I never gave the guy credit before but now that has changed.
Does anyone think that Dana gives Anderson Silva a shot at holding 2 belts now?
Posted on 12/28/08 at 11:56 am to etm512
true. you could definitely tell in round 2 nog might not have known where he was. Hell, even after he got knocked down the first time. He didn't even try to take it to the ground once.
from a business perspective. hell no. This isn't boxing where the boxers control much of their fighting destiny.

overall i think it was a great PPV. i think i missed on all my picks, though.
well...i picked the local boy to win and that fight was just awesome. i haven't seen anyone verbally tap to leg kicks in quite some time!
anyways, looking forward to Jan. 17th now!

I see what you're saying but he is giving BJ that shot next month. I would say it only happens if BJ loses because I am sure he doesn't want 2 guys holding 4 of the 5 belts.

Talking with a friend who trains at matt serra's gym. He says GSP is training like an absolute freak and he doesn't see how BJ can win unless BJ does the same.
But yeah, I didn't even think about BJ fighting for two belts. I think it more has to do with it being such a huge rematch.
