Even though they rely on 1 or 2 pitches?

What can you do with 2 pitches?

Signed
Mariano Rivera

And if a baseball game only lasted 2 innings, Mariano would be the best. If he had to pitch a second and third time through the order, he wouldn't be first ballot HOF 5 years after he doesn't return to the game.

You need to make 2 threads. The guys I threw out have nastiest 1-2 pitches. You threw out guys with nastiest array of pitches 3-4+.

Hard to compare relievers vs starters in this.

I agree with this. See my comment about Mariano. Overall, how many people on this list could go out and pitch 9 innings still throwing as nasty as the first inning on any given outing? I'm thinking just Verlander

Sabathia in recent years, but he's past his prime.

Doesn't make it any less nasty.

Huh if Gio's stuff is not over the plate how do you call it nasty ?

When and if he finds the plate more often he will be in the discussion

I was just looking at some stats. Sabathia still is doing OK. He averages 7+ innings per game and is still up there in strike outs wins and a decent 3.78 ERA.

Gio is pitching amazing, averaging 1.3 SO per inning, 1.99 ERA and 6-1 record. The reason I say his stuff isn't as nasty as Verlander or Felix is because he can only pitch on average 6 innings before he has to be pulled.

Right now, Verlander averages almost 8 innings per game, strikes out a lot of batters, has an amazing 2.14 ERA and a 5-1 record. I still remember his one loss to Tampa. He picthed a shutout into the 9th inning only throwing 80 pitches to that point. A few batters reached base and he changed his approach and blew it.

All pitchers on the list are comparable, but I think Verlander is just a little more special where he is in his career including 2 no hitters and has come very close on a few more including this past Friday.

Verlander - Least hittable
Darvish - Best slider/curve
Strasburg - Nastiest overall arsenal
Kershaw
Felix - Most movement
Halladay
Weaver - Weirdest delivery
Lincecum - Best changeup

There are too many pitchers to narrow it down to a top 5.
