This is the part where I have to find a curve. The science of athletics is so advanced compared to 40-50 years ago.

Larry Bird is maybe a top 10 player all-time.

MJ
Lebron
List doesn't matter after that.
Jmarto stick to frying chicken wings. Pistol doesn't deserve to be on this list!

Here is the starting five I would pick out of those:
1 - Magic. I am not the biggest fan of Magic's but no one has played the point like that, with that combination of size, vision, and everything else. Small guards could give him a little trouble but he gave it back to them ten-fold.
2 - MJ. Again, not a player I was a big fan of, but the greatest shooting guard that I have ever seen. Not close among players I actually saw play and a lockdown defender, to boot.
3 - Bird. An ultra-tough choice here. Bird is one of my all-time favorites, but Bryant, James, and others defend better, slash better, and more athletic. It could be slightly biased but I'm going with Bird for one reason: this starting 5 needs someone who can stretch the D and he could do it better than James or Bryant, and I think he was just a better overall player than Dirk.
4 - Malone. In some ways, I find myself perplexed with my own pick, but when you consider what you want a PF to do on this team - rebound, run the floor, play d, and score without plays being designed for him - I go with the Mailman over some guys I have preferred in terms of style of play. Barkley would stop the ball too much, which is a no-no on this fantasy squad. Duncan might have worked, and I considered cheating and putting Russell here.
5 - Kareem. Another absurdly difficult chioce, but at 7'2", he blocked shots, ran the floor well (Airplane jokes aside), was extremely skilled, and a significantly better foul shooter than Wilt or Shaq, which is the main reason I give the nod to 'Cap, as Magic used to call him.
Notes: MJ is probably the reason I did not go with James or Kobe. He does some of the same things they do, giving me the freedom to pick Bird at the 3.
