Getting home from work, wife already picked up the pizza, and she's got a big smile because she got the movies she wanted from Blockbuster.
Whether or not you got the new release was such a massive factor on the weekend. I can remember being at the Essen location and having them call the College one to see if they still had a new release they could hold for me while I raced over hahaha.

There Was something magical about video stores. The anticipation that you would finally be able to watch the new release which had been checked out for a solid 2 weeks.
In fact, I'd venture to say that the disappointment of a video being out of stock birthed a feeling of excitement when you were forced to rent a different choice and it turns out to be excellent.
With streaming, I miss out on a lot of those "second choice" movies as I no longer have to browse the box art to find something interesting.
Sigh...

so glad video stores came along. Until then i thought a vcr was just for recording soap operas.

You could argue that Blockbuster actually created better family night experiences than streaming media apps do now. Something about going into the store and checking out the covers of every movie and reading the back to get a quick synopsis.
Maybe they'll make a comeback in about 10 years?

Definitely. "Oh, look at that scene...that one looks good."
It was even better with games. Checking the back of the boxes to see screenshots of the games was a MUST. "OMG it looks SOOO real!!" Hahaa.
Most of the time I would go over to my padna's house, we'd go to the little store and always get Black Bass (or Super Black Bass) on Nintendo, and play that shite for like 12 hours straight.
I agree that there was something special about the video rental store, and it was an easy place to kill an hour if you weren't paying attention. Like a kid in a candy store for me. RIP, movie rentals. :poursoneout:
I firmly believe that I kept Showbiz Video on Burbank up and running with all my rentals when I was in college. Plus, they had almost all of the Faces of Death videos and I'd rent those things all the damn time.

I find it kind of crazy that video stores actually still exist.
I walked into what I thought was a thrift shop type place.
I looked around and realized it was an effing video rental store. Literally nobody there....not even workers. I slowly backed out the door and left.
I'm confident that was a brief trip to the Twilight Zone.
ETA: this was this past summer

Friendly Video has to be a money laundering front or something
that place on Drusilla by what used to be hi nabor? I think they're still alive because of their porn selection....although i'm not even sure who rents porn anymore.

I remember making family outings to Blockbuster and we'd all pick up a movie or two for the weekend.

And in 29 years, Blockbuster has been made completely obsolete. It's hard to believe how things change so relatively quick.
More like 10 years. I remember renting VHS tapes in the early 200s. DVD almost instantly, completely replaced them, but it didn't last long.
The "second choice" point is an excellent one, but the effect of not having a catalog of movies to choose from will be that a lot of classics are going to be forgotten. It's already happened to music.
