Fight Club
Of the books that I've read and also seen the movie than I'd say this easily. The book was good but the movie was epic. The writing in the film itself was much wittier/powerful than in book IMO. Most of the best lines in the movie weren't in the book. And Brad Pitt was the embodiment of Tyler Durden. Definitely born to play the role.
I read the book as well and this was the first that came to mind when I saw the thread title. Pahlaniuks writing has gotten better with time. Fight club was his first novel. Fincher, Pitt and Norton all did a great job.

Gone With The Wind never seems to get any love
Book is nowhere near the level of the movie.

It did win the Pulitzer.
And it's the second favorite book by American readers, just behind the Bible, according to a 2008 Harris Poll.
I just think it's not great literature but long and gossip - soap opera-y.

It's a good adaptation, although really it's almost word for word in large sections so it really didn't take much work. It would have been better if the Coens had made it 10 minutes longer and included Sheriff Bell's WWII back story. It sheds some light on the ending. Even better, make it 20 minutes and also include the hitchiker from the book for some great dialogue and a little more insight into what Cormac McCarthy was driving at.
"/thread" is rarely the case and it isn't here either.

Will not. Max Brooks hates it and tried to sue to get the rights back.
I have to go with Jaws and Jurassic Park.

Lonesome Dove (I think of it as a 6 hour movie, not a miniseries)

The Exorcist is good...both the book and movie scared the crap outta me. I actually liked the book Jaws better than the movie but the movie ending made for a happier exit.

I can dig Jurassic Park, but the book was better.
I was really pissed when they screwed up Crichton's Timeline. One of my favorite books, and the movie was terrible.
I hope Ender's Game lives up to the book's rep.

I agree with jiffy johnson - no country for old men wins. It is a spot on perfect adaptation of the book to the screen, nothing much added. Hell, I read the book after seeing the movie three times and it was as if it were written after watching the movie, not the other way around. If nothing much had to be done, that is a solid adaptation IMO.
