The reaction from Rothstein may have been the realization that he actually lost money on that bet.
Didn't they say he won $1m by fixing the world series? If so, it would be significant that he had to spend that much in bribery money to Nucky. Plus, he had to pay lawyers.
I'm not sure if this eases his mind any, but he had some life insurance policies on the boys from Philly. I can't exactly remember how much but I thought it was 250K on each. So at least he gets 750k for killing them. Add the million for fixing the world series, then he isn't down.

i had forgotten about the life insurance policies

quote:thats what i thought. so, if lucky killed doyle (going to have to rewatch the episode to determine) then it would be a wash because it would be an even million in life insurance policies
250K on each
ETA: Misread the thread & rewatched the scene. it wasnt doyle. didnt mean to throw anyone off.
Rothstein still gets money though b/c jimmy killed one brother, al killed one, and Harrow killed two guys. i think he had 3-4 brothers sign policies plus doyle. will have to rewatch that episode one day too

Pretty sure they would have made it a little clearer if they killed off a character like his???

yeah, like i mentioned earlier in the thread, i think it was just a brewer selling the booze and it's just a foreshadowing of next season and how the bootlegging business gets ruthless and violent.

I could be wrong but I think when the servant lady told Nucky to be careful and handed him the bible she knew something. She was always around and it was clear Eli had been there before talking to the Commodore about Nucky.. She gave him a bible that had a page marked, maybe it was a bible verse that had to do with what she had heard

it definitely wasnt doyle.

Yeah and when Nookie looked at the page his facial expression was very shocked and possibly hurt for a brief second. I'd bet the house Nookie knows about Eli, but he will not let anyone know until his brother is of no use to him anymore. Then he will kill his own brother...
I think Jimmy will in the end side with Nookie as Nookie was more of a father to him than his real dad ever was. Nookie told Eli "blood is thicker than water", in season 2 I expect this phrase to be proven wrong.
Also thought this was an average episode...but average for this series is fricking great.

I think the name is Nucky; not frickin Nookie.

Watched it again tonight.
I have no idea who Lucky killed. Looked to me it was just an irrelevant bootlegger? They didn't show his face long and it wasn't Doyle. (I paused and slo mo'ed) Is this a sign of how ruthless the game is going to get? Not sure.

Correct. His actual name is Enoch Thompson. Nucky for short.

I didn't think of it this way. Now it makes more since why he abruptly appointed his brother Sheriff again. More mind games and control measures.
This show is AMAZING! Too bad my wife lost interest after the first two.

I don't know about that. Didn't slow Eli down from meeting with Jimmy and the Commedore.
But you never know with this show...."Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer!"

yeah but wont rothstein make it back since he tool out life insurance policies on all of their heads and they all get murdered? i thought rothstein was getting off easy with the million dollar price tag knowing that he would get some money back if nucky killed them all off.
i completely forgot about that, but you're right. he will get all of it back and more.
