I guess Akeem's donation to the Dukes in CTA helped get the firm back.

Not a terrible movie, it had a couple of laughs, but ultimately it was just a big nostalgia trip to the 1st movie. The original is probably one of the greatest comedy movies of all time imo. So many memorable quotes and funny moments, the movie holds up extremely well 30 years later. Even when watching it for the 10th+ time, I will still find myself laughing out loud multiple times.
This movie had very few laugh out loud moments. The movie was packed tight with famous celebrities, whether they were playing themselves or a character. Very happy to see James Earl Jones and John Amos return as well. It wouldn't have felt right without them. I looked it up and apparently the mother passed away years ago in the 90s. That does suck. RIP to her. Apparently her and James played husband and wife twice, as she was Simba's mom in Lion King.
The son, I can't even remember his name, that's how much I disliked him was very forgettable. I feel like he was trying to pretend to be a New York guy hardened by the streets. But he really just came off as corny and not very funny. That part was a major disappointment. Wish we could have had more Akeem and Semi overall.
The funeral was a solid portion though. Definitely the highlight of the movie.

The funeral was great.
And the outtakes at the end showed a glimpse of what the movie was missing.
In the outtakes Morgan Freeman states "after the great kings death, there was no more fricking"
And that was a fun part of the original. The nonchalant "frick you too".

You just can’t judge C2A through that same lens. It’s a self aware, corporate nostalgia trip that’s pretty much a parody of the original. If you view it as just that going in, then it’s easier to watch
That might make it easier to view, but it doesn't make the movie any better. It did feel like a parody of the first one. There were a few funny moments, but it was just a bad movie that was very predictable. Norbit and Pluto Nash actually have significantly higher reviews on Amazon compared to "Coming 2 America". That's pretty bad.

Movie is terrible, slog to finish. Even the barber shop jokes were terrible. I did like the funeral though...

When Eddie’s singing after his date with Lisa and some dude yells “Shut the frick up!” That always made me laugh hard for some reason.

A very late bump. But damn, I loved this movie. Really appreciate that they went to great lengths to get the original characters to return.

Watched it once; that was enough for me.
