I don't think he killed Wayne-Gro because of an attempt to pursue perfection.
I think it was much more a matter of letting emotions cloud his judgement. He could have had someone else do it for him after he'd made it to New Zealand.

One of the greatest not mentioned a lot as great movies.
Perfect/better ending to me...
Something like Shawshank or City of Industry (Keitel)... DeNiro leaves her a significant stash of coin, he is shot up and ya might think he will die. In an epilogue shot months later she is painting and gets a "come on down" postcard from New Zealand.
