"My child, you have come to me my son. For who now is your father if it is not me? I am the well spring, from which you flow. When I am gone, you will have never been. What would your world be, without me? My son."

From starring in my all-time favorite animated, science fiction, and baseball movie of all time, this man’s voice is pure childhood nostalgia to a happier time.

RIP legend

When the last night game the Rangers played in Arlington Stadium was over, and the players were off the field, the light standards went out in sequence from third base to home plate. Then you could hear people milling about in the dark on the field. The Rangers and Royals players had just gone into the dugout, so I thought they were coming back on the field for a ceremony and for the fireworks show the team had promoted. But then a single spotlight shined on a single player, who came out of the visiters dugout. It was an actor that was supposed to be Shoeless Joe Jackson. Then the whispering voice from Field of Dreams said, "If you build it they will come. Then another spotlight shined on a single heavy set character in front of the Rangers dugout dressed in a white shirt with suspenders and a driving cap, exactly like JEJ was when he gave his "If you build it, they will comes" speech.

Then more spotlights came on shining on players dressed in old uniforms milling around, and then walking towards the actor portraying JEJ in a line. The movie came out in 1989, so it was a pretty powerful message, in 1993, for Ranger fans that were anticipating the team playing in a new stadium the next season.

One of the coolest parts of it was George Brett's last series before retirement. He and all of the Royals and Rangers players were all standing in front of there dugouts by the time they turned the spotlights on the players lined up on the field. They were all clapping and cheering just like we were.

The only way it would have been cooler was if they'd had JEJ, Ray Liotta and Costner there reproducing the scene.
