this is what it says on the Wikipedia entry on Karate:
Karate (Japanese pronunciation: [kaɽate] English: /kəˈrɑːtiː/) is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) from indigenous fighting methods called te (手, literally: "hand"?) and Chinese kenpō.
If this entry is correct, then it is at least derived from something from China.
