I always found it funny that people on the show and off felt confident in Jack's ability to date remains. I'm not completely sure that being a spinal surgeon qualifies someone for this kind of thing.

Honestly, I don't think it matters if he was off by a decade or two. I think they just wanted to impress upon us that they had been dead for a good while...possibly even longer than the 40-50 years.

I still think that Hurley's comments foreshadow another time jump
It is pretty clear to me that it was basically the writers having Hurley talk to/poke fun at the audience, something they have Hurley do from time to time.

Yeah I was waiting for that response, but what can you do? That's what happened on the show and that's the most accurate way of wording it.

I definitely think we are about to see more time travel. Hurley practically told the audience this when he commented on Adam and Eve when while at the cave on their way to the Lighthouse. Paraphrasing: "what if we went back in time again and Adam and Eve are two of us".
Well considering we can assume that Rose, Benard AND VINCENT (

If Rose and Bernard travelled in the first place then in theory they should have travelled back to the present.

BUUUUUTTT...they are nowhere to be found. Perhaps they traveled further back with VINCENT (

I can't think of any reasons why they wouldn't time travel along with everyone else.

Remember what show you are talking about.
Why was Jack sent back to 1977 while Sun stayed in 2007 after the flash on 815? Theoritically, they both should have went back.

Hoo noes?
But everyone that stayed on the island jumped through time together...at least from what we know.

The writers wouldn't have Jack "date" the remains if he wasn't at least semi-accurate. They probably figured he was the most reasonable character to do it at the time given that Arzt and Charlotte weren't on the show yet.

I'm pretty sure that only the candidates jumped to 1977.

They weren't in the immediate proximity of the Atomic Bomb.

Kate's not a candidate, so no thats not it. I think its the people that Locke physically recruited to go back to the Island is who went back in time. Locke didn't recruit Ben, Sun, or Frank.

wasn't Austen not crossed out in the lighthouse

While the numbers are still the same in both places, the ones not crossed out on the cave are the candidates. There are several not crossed out on the Lighthouse that are crossed out in the cave. Something tells me that if you cross that person out at the lighthouse you can no longer see them, so even though they aren't candidates, Jacob/MIB may have still wanted to keep an eye on them.

Maybe it doesn't matter, but Jack is likely no better at dating remains than Hurley or Rose. Could you look at a set of bones and tell within a decade how long they've been there? Now throw in the fact that they are in a moist cave, away from any sunlight. Does that affect the process? I'm sure it does, but I don't know how it is affected. I'm guessing most spinal surgeons also would not know the effects.
As I said before, I just thought it was funny that Jack dated the remains and everyone acted like he should be right because he's a doctor.
