Yeah, we're getting a little ahead of our ourselves.
So, does Ben live to see another week?

My second thought was that he may have been the captain and for some reason been locked in the brig when the ship landed. Perhaps he was locked in the brig because he was steering she ship off course toward the island, and by the time they got close enough it was too late for the rest of the crew to do anything about it.

The Lost Experience (semi-canon) implied that Magnus Hanso was the captain. Doesn't mean the show will follow it though.

I neglected to mention that my other reason for thinking Richard to be first mate is because in "The Constant" Charles Widmore took care to secure the black rock first mate's ledger at the auction. This ledger must have contained the necessary information for Widmore to get back to the island, and I'm assuming he knew it was Richard's.

just because widmore wants the first mate's log doesnt mean richard is the first mate. widmore just wants to get back to the island.

Just from a writing perspective, I think it's a safe bet that Richard is the first mate. It's also well-documented that Richard knows how to get back and forth between the island and North America.

richard should be the first mate.
i thought it would be a weird twist if the skeleton we saw in chains during season 2 or 3 on the black rock ended up being richard somehow and he doesnt age, because he is already dead but has been claimed.

possibly, but "good to see you out of those chains" - he wasnt the first mate for the entire journey
This is where I think Matthew Abbadon comes in. I think Abbadon is also timeless (well, until he was shot off-island), and is the counter to Alpert
Alpert was the first mate (perhaps), Abbadon starts a mutiny and takes over the ship....yada, yada, yada, the BlackRock runs ashore.....yada, yada, yada.....the boat ends up 5 miles inland....and here we are today

maybe it was season 1 we saw that skeleton on the black rock

the people in the cave are widely believed to be rose and bernard...
they die in the 70's somehow and just rott away in the caves together.

In my opinion I think that the Island flashing before Lepidus' eyes was proof enough for me as to how the Black Rock got there.
If they try and say that the Black Rock ran ashore and continued moving on land for 5 miles I might explode.
As for the Abbadon theory...i'll buy it.
Posted on 3/8/10 at 3:09 pm to Uncle Stu
Abbadon could have been one of the slaves...considering that the Black Rock was involved in the slave trade (according to the Lost Experience).
Posted on 3/8/10 at 3:09 pm to Uncle Stu
I think that's pretty sound speculation. I was assuming that some kind of mutiny occurred, and Richard was chained up whether he was the captain or first mate. I forgot about Matthew Abbadon altogether.

i was thinking that too....thanks for the confirm. i dont really read much on the LOST sites but ive seen EVERY episode like 4 times.

I think they dated the bodies to much earlier than that. In season 1, Jack said they had to be dead for at least 40-50 years. Rose and Bernard are back in 2007 at this point anyway. There has to be more time travel involved for any Losties to be Adam and Eve...an I do happen to think that this will be the case. See my prior post in this thread.
