Good call if that's the case. I'm not sure we'll get an answer this specific though.

Just from a writing perspective, I think it's a safe bet that Richard is the first mate. It's also well-documented that Richard knows how to get back and forth between the island and North America.

Its not a safe bet since Locke said to Richard that "It was good to see him out of those chains". And Jacob could have told him ways off the Island since Jacob seems to be very good at leaving the Island as well.

Too bad. We are going to see it again IMO.

We've discussed that there may have been a mutiny on the ship. If Richard was the first mate, he would have been charged with protecting the captain and maintaining security. Perhaps they didn't want to kill him.

And there's also the possibility that the reference to richard's "chains" was purely figurative referring to jacob's stranglehold on him.

I'm no LOST scholar, but I just have a feeling Richard is the first mate and the one who wrote the ledger.

I just mean the time travel analysis. I can't wrap my head around that stuff.

Its possible of course, but I wouldn't bet with those odds in Vegas. And Richard seems to be loyal to Jacob no matter what, and while it may be in the Monster's opinion that he was enslaved by Jacob, I'm not sure that Richard would immediately freak out with the chains being mentioned unless he was enslaved.

I dont think so

"hello Richard, good to see you out of those chains"

it's a stretch to misconfigure those words too much

Either that or pirates take the ship. The ledger was found among the effects of pirates off the coast of Africa.

So this was the big reveal to Richard. Perhaps the first time he's seen the MIB in his true form, without the MIB disguising himself as someone else from Richard (got all that? ), in a long time.

I think the reference to the chains was mostly literal too. I was just pointing out a possibility, however unlikely.

I just connect Richard with first mate since that duty seems to carry over to the island. He is always subordinate to a leader, but ultimately tasks himself with the defense of the island.

That's interesting. I don't remember that information.

I think it is fairly safe to assume Richard was literally in chains at some point. With a slave ship on the island, it is natural for people to assume that is the source of his imprisonment, and that's the most logical assumption. However, as I said before, I have a feeling he goes back farther than the Black Rock. Just call it a hunch.

Same here...probably Sawyer, Ben, Locke though. Desmond & Miles are up there too.

bottom 3 are Claire, Kate, and Jack.

Just because Richard was on the black rock doesn't mean that he hadn't been on the island before.

That's an option I hadn't considered. May be too complicated, but this is Lost.

Very true. I'd like to expand that same reasoning to other people who were/may be on the Black Rock.
