That was Joss Whedon 101.
He is the master of sudden, unexpected humor.
Yep.
Serenity is filled with these, as well as Firefly.
Favorite Firefly one: Mal is fighting Niska and Zoe tells Jayne this is something he has to do himself. Mal yells back "No I don't!"

frick people who clap in the middle of the movie. I'm trying to catch the dialouge and these dumbasses are clapping.
They did WAY more than clap. It was a loud mix of cheering, uncontrollable laughter, shouting, and jumping out of their seats yelling "frick YEAH".
I didn't hear any immediate dialogue following that.

Mal (rhetorically to the group):You think you can captain this ship better than I can?
Jayne: Yes, i do.
Mal (flustered): Well. . . . you can't.
Angel: Are you the demon guardian of torturus?
Demon: What? I guess.
Angel: What do your masters call you?
Demon: Rob or . . ."hey" (head nod)
Jayne: Yes, i do.
Mal (flustered): Well. . . . you can't.
quote:Not to mention Buffy and Angel made careers of this.

My theater clapped for everything. And i mean everything. All in all i loved Loki. He had an undeniable on screen swagger(hate that word). Great movie. May have to go to the drive in here in Atlanta to watch it in peace

WTF does people see in this movie? I just simply cannot comprehend all the hype.

It's Indiana Jones and ET vs Darth Vader.
I think the hype will die after everyone has seen it. In a year or two, the zingers and one liners will keep it from being a classic.

Have you seen it?

The dynamics between strong characters.
Great action and problem solving for the characters.
A charming naive villain.
THANOS.
Banter.
Shawarma.
Samuel L. Fury.
Need I go on?

WTF does people see in this movie?
it is fun in a 10 year old way. non-serious. no real threats/danger. action
it has some epic cgi fighting scenes
it does a really good job of not rushing into things. long exposition, which i adore
i thought it had a pretty good villain
the writing is better than you expect for a simple/non-serious/non-threatening movie
however, the characters are flat outside of stark/banner. the story isn't anything special. it was a good movie, but i don't get the super hype it's receiving

I can see someone not liking this movie but to be perplexed at why lots of people would like it reeks of pretentiousness. As far as a movie knowing what it is supposed to be and achieving it, I cannot imagine better perfection.

So we have some history folks. After opening to 80.5 million on Friday, the Avengers earned over 69.7 million on Saturday to give it a two day total of over $150.2 million in two days. Only 3 movies have ever had a 3 day opening of more than 150 mil: The Hunger Games (152), The Dark Knight (154), and HP7P2 (169). After arguably their biggest box office flop, Disney has followed up their year with the biggest opening for a movie of all-time and what may wind up being their highest grossing movie of all-time.
And the reason why it's doing so well is they took the time to flesh out all of the characters individually, people got attached to them, they hired a director who has been vastly underappreciated and actually gave him a budget for movie. The result is a movie with characters we care about, dialogue we can enjoy to say the least, a story that is simple yet with some degree of complexity, and phenomenal action throughout that has set a new industry standard and will raise the bar to the next level for any action movie that wants to present itself in 3D. Oh and the Disney Marketing Machine did their job and they did it exceptionally well. The marketing campaign around this and Avatar are textbook marketing campaigns for all movie studios out there with a big budget film that they want to all but guarantee a huge amount of income on.

i agree with this. it was a good, solid, fun movie
i don't think it was amazing. THAT level of hype i don't get, but it's hard not to like/enjoy this movie

chill out. transformers may not have even set the bar for similar action scenes. there was nothing new with the action
this is exactly the type of lies/hyperbole that i don't get
enjoy the movie for what it is; don't turn it into something it's not

please explain the similarities of the marketing campaigns, especially in light of the vast difference in stock/established characters and the markets existing prior to the movies' respective releases

Really? After 5 movies in 4 years and one of the largest marketing campaigns in history with teases for this one big story at the end of all previous movies and you wonder why there is hype for this movie?
I thought you were suppose to be some sort of internet intellectual and you can't understand why this movie has the hype that it has?

i'd suggest that before you attempt to criticize my points, you should try to understand the point i'm making first

Well that's because you are a pretentious douchebag with no understanding of what the average 13-30 man wants when he ventures to the cinema.
Pretty cut and dry there.

Why bother? You'll just move the goalposts again.

i even said it was a solid-good movie, and i'm a "pretentious douche"?

and this was a movie that had much of the dialogue and comedy aimed at 10-12 year old boys
quote:
You'll just move the goalposts again.
what goalposts did i move?
the thing you quoted came DIRECTLY after a comment about how i judged the product itself

Because only a pretentious douchebag would put this movie's floor at solid and its ceiling at good. Even critics are averaging out to 8 which is more than just good and they hate comic book movies and action films.
quote:
and this was a movie that had much of the dialogue and comedy aimed at 10-12 year old boys
Yet another example of you not knowing shite. What do you want? A bunch of fake elaborate drama where they all discuss their personal little feelings and long arse monologues that have no fricking purpose? Get over yourself.
quote:
what goalposts did i move?
First you say you can't understand why the movie is getting so much hype. Then I tell you why. Then you're like well no I was clearly talking about the product itself. Then I call you out and tell you why.
You should probably stop this whole internet wise guy routine you think you have going on because only a feeble mind would buy into it.
Now run along and watch The Artist and pat yourself on the back for watching such a deep adult film like a good fake intellectual.

it was solid-good
it wasn't perfect
there were dramatic lulls
there were too many corny 1-liners that failed
the characters were paper thin, for the most part. tony stark was awesome. captain america was dull/boring. banner was OK. sam jackson's over-acted character was flat. so were hawkeye and black widow. etc
there was never a sense of danger for our heroes. i liked loki as a villain, but his army being disconnected from him was weak. the actual creatures weren't fearsome, either. hulk and thor are ridiculously strong. you don't really need captain america or hell even iron man in a battle
also lots of the dialogue and character interacation were aimed at a middle-school level. i COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND WHY (demos/$), but to judge a movie has to be from the objective
it's really good for the type of movie it attempted to be. the problem was the market it was aimed at requires such a simple movie with flat character/dialogue that even a perfect movie in this non-serious/non-threatening comic genre couldn't be a great film
that's not me being pretentious; i'm being objective
i enjoyed the movie and it was good. it just wasn't anything amazing/special
