the Carl arm scene had me on edge and my anxiety was through the roof.

Rick's reactions were making that scene work. Andrew upped his game for that exchange.

My favorite part of the episode was when Negan took off Carl's hat and tossed it on the ground.

Made me like Negan for 5 seconds.

So Rick, Carl, Carroll, and Daryl are the only ones left from the original group now? Talk about killing off your cast.

I would say it's actually amazing that there is still four of the OG's left.

And Judith. If you believe life begins at conception.

Think of the shite Maggie has lost in the ZA.

Basically every person she's ever loved.

My wife and I were saying that last night. She's either going to lose her fricking mind or turn into a total cold-hearted badass like Carol.

Reread that and tell me you don't sound like a fricking child stomping their feet on the ground because they didn't get the iPhone 7 for christmas

I couldn't care less what you think. They shouldn't have left the bat scene as a cliffhanger, and they shouldn't have dragged it out even further in this episode.

It was a great episode, but it didn't change anything about how they screwed up the effect of Negan taking Lucille to someone's skull.

the Carl arm scene

The only improvement I would have wanted to see there was for Rick to start to swing the hatchet down, only for Negan to stop it with Lucille.

but so far he's been all cold and calculating business. The evil thing to do would have been to kill all of Rick's people, but he chose to kill as few as necessary to convince them to work for him.

He wouldn't go killing people in Alexandria any more than a CEO would fire someone at a local branch. That's Rick's job to get his people in line. Now maybe if Rick is short one week Negan would hurt people to leverage against Rick, but with who Negan has been presented as so far, he doesn't seem like the type to get his hands dirty on a local level.

And keep in mind that from Negan's perspective, Rick and company killed a LOT of his people for seemingly no reason (maybe at least in his mind). So some of this is simply revenge/retaliation in his mind.

BTW, I did catch a lot of Talking Dead after the show last night. I don't usually watch it, but wanted to see what Steven Yeun had to say. But is Chris Hardwick always that annoying? Every other thing he said seemed like he was trying to name drop or brag that he hangs out with the cast or whatever. Or like one time he made sure to say "People always ask me who dies, and I didn't even know until yesterday...when I watched the episode," like he was trying to brag that he had seen it early. It just seemed really strange.

It was effective for me and about 90% of watchers in this thread...

Maybe its you.

Often wonder what the dynamic would have been if Shane had left and hit the road after the barn incident, and had came back after Lori Was dead.

I actually think the opposite, revealing the death or deaths right away would have left less of an impact. Creating more tension again helped give the scene its impact. It needed some build up after the long break between seasons

I agree with this. I know that the instant gratification generation was livid about the cliffhanger but the events and deaths last night were much more tension filled and heart rending because of the wait. Like I said earlier, we all felt how broken down the group is now (especially Rick). That's only possible because of the totality of the events in last night's episode.

It was poetic. A foreshadowing. It's like Negan is saying "I'm daddy now, baw, take off that stupid hat"

Yes.

Pretty much the reason I don't watch it.
