Saw the trailer for it last night, had never heard of it. 83 score on RT so I assumed it was a hit piece but was still curious if anyone had seen it.

It focuses mostly on the relationship with Roy Cohn and his first wife early in his career.

There are parts that make him look bad especially RE how he treated the first wife as years pass. In spite of the negative parts he is somewhat sympathetic as he was portrayed.

The behaviors today (never give up, never admit fault, always litigate for a better deal) are portrayed as being taught to him by Cohn rather than something he learned on his own.

They didn't include the influence of Norman Vincent Peale on his power of positive thinking. They do show him going through liposuction and scalp surgery for aesthetic reasons. His older brother is portrayed as being an alcoholic who struggled to gain his father's approval.

Probably the most interesting actor plays the Roy C character. That was a complicated guy who was part of huge moments in 20th century American history

I enjoyed it. Stan at points fricking crushes the tone and tenor and speech patterns of latter years Trump. It was interesting to see him basically evolve and become even more ruthless than Cohn was.

They recreate a lot of infamous footage of Trumps interviews and just candid press video of him via this grainy camera filter and it looks fantastic

I recommend. The only thing is it’s a hair over 2 hours and it does not zip by

Does it mention that Cohn died of complications from AIDS?

Yes Cohns homosexuality is on full display and his death is covered. When Trump kind of becomes a big deal and surpasses Cohn in stature, and the roles are reversed from when the movie starts, Trump kind of distances himself from Cohn because of this. And then you end up seeing his death and the aftermath of his death from AIDS

Friend,

It is a very well made movie with great acting. The tripartite structure uses the Commodore Hotel/pursuing Ivana (rise) and Trump Tower/marriage to Ivana (peak) and the Taj Mahal/Marla (fall) with great skill.

Some have criticized it for inaccuracies such as a scene where Trump meets and his mentor and is seduced into drinking alcohol. Whether this happened or not literally is beside the point. The point of that scene was to show Cohn as the serpent in the Garden there to trick and tempt the innocent young Trump.

My full review is in my 2024 movies review thread on page two.

Yours,
