Sanity. It's a way to convey thoughts. Remember castaway with the beach ball? He believed somebody out there was listening, it gave him an audience and hope that he wasn't completely alone.
Get out of my head.

We're talking about a show based on a zombie apocalypse not a Van Gogh. The "meaning" should be about flesh-eating zombies and how to stay alive... not some writer trying to throw in a message about our dependence on fossil fuels.
I'm actually thinking about filling up some of my gas cans and lighting them on fire.

So TV shows have no meaning? they are completely disposable and have no value other than as an entertainment for one hour? Breaking Bad isn't about drug policy (or even health care)? The Shield wasn't a commentary on corruption? Nip/Tuck has nothing to offer on the topic of the superficiality of our culture?
I can't agree with that. If all TV had the value of an episode of Two and Half Men, I wouldn't watch TV. Good TV is about more than just blating images into our passive skulls for an hour.

No, we need more baby daddy drama.

But just because someone mentions oil or fossil fuels doesn't automatically mean it's got some sort of liberal agenda behind it...just like Shane's "eye for an eye" beatdown of a-hole husband doesn't mean it's some sort of bible-thumping bullshite.
I think human beings, especially ones in America (frick yeah!), are dependent on fossil fuels and everything that comes from that (fuel, electricity, etc.). It makes sense in a zombie apocalypse that once the power grids start to fail, shite starts to fall apart...once the power fades, tests are much harder to run, communcations are lost, etc. (which is what he said was the result of losing the power anyway).
I'm not saying that people don't thrust their spectrum-ending beliefs into shows, but IMO it fits completely well within the confines of the plot, and assuming it is political seems like you're looking for something political to be pissed about.

season 2 doesn't start till next October

Got to agree with Cokes on this one. My political BS radar went up immediately but I think it was more a statement of fact. Power grid goes down, we're basically shot back in time about ~200 years instantly once fossil fuels run out.
I do think it was a mixed message though. Serving two points. Fact and Political rhetoric.

I don't watch any of the shows you just listed... so I wouldn't know. Honestly I think most TV is crap these days... reality shows and other stupid shite. I like watching HGTV, ESPN, and History Channel. I just figured a show about zombies would be cool...

I'll go with that... but I'm still gonna fill up my gas cans and use the fuel to burn down some rain forests.

The only character who makes a direct political statement is the scientist, who is perhaps the least likeable character in the episode. If the writers were making a political stand, they would've given the line to Rick, the person the audience most identifies with. You don't send a political message with the words of your episode's creepy villain.

I'd say I identify more with Daryl.

I'm sure you do. the point is more that the writers have conciously had us experience the world from Rick's point of view. He is the protagonist, and the person whose perspective we are forced to share.

Look... if you're gonna keep using words like "protagonist" and "agitprop" then I'm going to have to ignore you.

Protagonist = the guy who got all them cool guns
Agitprop = Mouthin off so someone wants to shoot you with an infected arrow

Seen any liberals lately?

To be fair though, Rick doesn't seem like the type of person to ask "Why" and "How did we get here". If I remember correctly he didn't one time about how the virus started, what happened, etc. He was getting pushed the entire time by the group to seek answers. He is all about the here and now.

That is a given. I just did not care for the statement.
I guess you could call the Doc a villian, I really
did not see him that way.
