I usually don't get this way if a show is slow but I'm on season 2 of the Wire right now and I'm just finding it painful to get through. I keep watching because everyone says it gets great but i'm struggling to stay interested.
I would suggest watching it with the captions. Sometimes its hard to make out some of the things being said because of the street talk.
The first time I watched it I felt like I was missing some things as well and kind of plodded through it. Then I went back and watched again and it felt like everything completely opened up.
Another suggestion would be to read a summary of the episodes after watching to put pieces together. There are so many characters with so much going on its tough to follow the first time unless you really focus.

Yeah I got into it at the end.

As I said - very polarizing - I didn't "get it" until afterwards, although there were bright spots. I was binge watching at that point and probably got through Season 2 in a week or so.

It gets much much better. I watched through the end of season three and shite is hitting the fan.

It's not for everyone and you can say that about a lot of series, movies and entire genres to some extent. And fortunately one of the blessings of our modern world is that there have been so many good series and movies over the years that you could spend a lifetime of discretionary time watching what you are interested in. As such there would seem to be little point in forcing yourself to watch something you aren't interested in just because other people endorse it.
