I really think they have a real problem that causes the break in partnership and they agree to bury the hatchet to catch the killer. Maggie is seen in the trailer explaining why they had a fallout.

Pretty sure Rust would have recognized her. And Marty would be a little more upset about his daughter being murdered and what not

Did he? He has only mentioned it 3 times that I remember: during the interview, to Maggie at dinner, and to the Marty soon after the dinner, but I only remember him going into "details" the one time with the dicks in 2012
From what I have seen, I am assuming that the flashbacks are actually what happened, but anything that they have only said happened without showing a flashback is suspect.

Well from what we were shown you couldn't really see her face. As for Marty being upset, he could have had a falling out with his daughter. It's not crazy to think that parents don't speak to their children (especially ones that they don't get along with) for long stretches of time. They even opened by saying that they are keeping the details of the new case out of the press as well.
Then again it was just a small theory. Seems like they said the new victims name in one of the first two episodes but maybe I just didn't catch it.

I'm rewatching this now. I think it's Marty and rust lighting the field. Probably covering up one something they did.
