I’m glad I don’t have to try to write a plot to appeal to everyone. In this thread people are either complaining about the ending being too straightforward or complaining that not every question was answered. Going any further in either direction would just shift more people to the opposite camp. It’s hard enough to believe the conspiracy as demonstrated actually worked, let alone some larger one.
To me, this was always about Hayes. The case was a way to explore his character over time. The details are secondary.

The show is called True Detective. It's about the officers themselves. Seasons 1 and 3 have given us 4 of televisions most layered characters ever. It's clear that the actual cases they work wont satisfy our thirst for "Sixth Sense" level of twist. We have to keep in mind its the characters that kept us watching til the end.
