Kevin Costner was the guy they originally wanted for Hunt for Red October and he loved the script, but Dances with Wolves was a passion project for him and he didn't want to delay it or risk it not getting made.

In retrospect that was a good call, but I think Costner would have been a great fit for the role (from both the Clancy novel perspective and the Hollywood mainstream appeal perspective) and could have carried the franchise further.

I'll say this, this may have been Alec Baldwin's best role. He did great in Red October. With that being said, Ford was the best in my opinion.

Baldwin has the best part, did the best acting job, and was in the best movie by a longshot (thanks in large part to McTiernan's direction), but Ford was probably better suited all American boy scout type Jack Ryan that his films called for.

Overall, it's probably a toss up, but I think Baldwin could have done what Ford did in his films, but I don't think Ford could have been as good as Baldwin was in Red October.

Ford is to Jack Ryan as Moore was to James Bond.

Ford isn't bad but something just felt off.

Baldwin has that Connery vibe.

He seemed too old for where Ryan was at the time but I may be misremembering where his movie was in Ryan's timeline.

I would probably go with Baldwin too. He is good at faking manliness I guess.
