Hayes voice is starting to get on my nerves...his last album was hard to listen to. He greatly exaggerated his already half assed awful sound that made him unique in the first place for KMAG YOYO
Word. I've been a big fan for a while, but on KMAG YOYO he tries to hard to make his voice more uniquer or something. Lucinda Williams does the same shite and it pisses me off.

Even his later stuff is great: Crazy As A Loon
For me, its hard to beat Robert Earl Keen though. He is one of the best story tellers, IMO, with songs like Undone, Shades of Gray, Corpus Christi Bay, Lynville Train, and obviously The Road Goes On Forever. Guy knows how to tell a story in his songs...

I was going to add Bingham but he's Americana...but if we're not splitting hairs then Bingham is definitely up there.

James McMurtry is great.
Especially when he sings about his cousins Ruth Ann and Lynn.

Lucinda Williams
In late 90s or early 2000s, Time Magazine had an article about the best song writers in the country (or maybe world, cant remember). They named Lucinda #1

Lucinda peaked with Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, and really hasn't recaptured the magic in subsequent releases, IMHO.

I like the hell out of Lucinda. But the older she gets the more her voice gets on my nerves.

Agree 100%. I have a 20-song Lucinda playlist I listen to sometimes and dont have one song on it that came out after this album.

I'm gonna throw another Willie Nelson vote.
