I have a whole external hard drive filled up with Dead shows. I don't think I've ever listened to one of their studio albums all the way through. I'm not sure why you'd want to. Jerry translated on stage.
Another tip... Jerry Garcia Band shows can be every bit as good, and often times better than Dead shows.

American Beauty was one of 3 albums I got as a youngster that made me actually start thinking about and seeking out good music. I still listen to it, maybe it is nostalgia but I don't think starting out with that album could steer someone wrong.
And I have some JGB shite that is better than any Dead that I have.
Also am going to see Furthur for the first time in September, multiple sets over multiple night and a full rendition of workingman's dead. Can't wait.

Just because the best Dead is live doesn't mean studio is bad. Workingman's Dead is awesome, American Beauty too.
I've got loads of live shows, more than I can count. I listen to those primarily, but I'll throw in a studio CD every so often.

I just got an awesome JGB show. I think it is 12/21/79 Berkeley. The Positively 4th Street is jamming.

IMO their shows can be hit or miss with some tunes or the entire setlist. I listen to the studio stuff b/c way back when it was a lot harder to acquire bootleg tapes so my thinking is they do go hand in hand. However, my personal favorites tend to be their official live albums like Europe 72, Steal your face, or One from the vault.
Then there is also the studio albums I almost cringe listening to and prefer it live.
