Invest that money into a used PRS SE model guitar if you want an entry level dual humbucker guitar. They are superior in every way to even the top shelf Epi's and are comparable to the Gibson Studio's. I have never played an Epiphone Les Paul that was fun or inspiring to play and I am a big time Les Paul fan. The necks arent comfortable and the fret work is terrible. By the time you spend the money to upgrade pups and wiring and get it set up by a pro, you may have well just bought a PRS and be ready to go right out of the box.
Edit: This is purely my experiences. I dont mean to offend anyone that is a Epi fan as musical instruments and music as a whole for that matter is completely subjective. If you got a gem Epi Les Paul then that's awesome.

I second the PRS SE idea. Those are some great guitars - I got the Santana SE when the SEs first were introduced, and I still play that thing. The quality is even better now. Very versatile guitars.
If you want a Les Paul, then you want a Les Paul. Spend an hour at a good music store playing a bunch of stuff and find one that feels right. I like my LTD EC-1000 (Les Paul style but with EMGs) and PRS Santana SE way better than $3000+ Gibson Les Pauls I've played; it's just personal preference. Good luck.

Epiphone Elitist
I bought one of these in 2010 and have since bought a much nicer guitar but still love playing the Epi Elite. It's American made parts, feels just like a LP, but I think it was assembled in Asia which is the only thing separating it from the LP. Could be wrong, but I think that was the deal. Anyway, great tone, easy palm muting, and I slayed all the fat chicks after playing it at Tiger Bar.

One is not better than the other, the two just sound different. Like getting punched in the face or getting kicked in the stomach.

many guitarists prefer the tone and weight of the SG over the les paul.

I can't play an SG. Something about that double cutaway makes the neck feel a mile long, almost like I'm playing a bass. I have no trouble with and love a 335, though. Weird.

I love SG's. I used to have a 2004 gibson SG and ended up ebaying it after I didn't feel like I had much of a need for an electric guitar.
