It’s ok to admit you aren’t familiar with Ritter’s music

You don’t know Josh Ritter either? He used to be discussed on this board quite a bit.

Where is all this Ritter hate coming from? I remember starting a thread about him like 4 years ago and everyone seemed to love him. He’s one of the most respected songwriters in the music industry today.
He wrote a ton of songs for Joan Baez, Bob Weir and Van Morrison. Close friends with John Prine before he died. There used to be a guy on this board whose username was “Monster Ballads” named after the Ritter song.
I can’t tell if none of you have heard of him or if you just don’t like him for some reason.

Take your pick from either The Afghan Whigs Gentleman or Black Love albums.

I’ll give you three from that album.
It’s not his best musically, but lyrically it’s incredible.
Change of Time
Another New World
Lantern (Live)
I have trouble believing anyone who’s listened to these songs can call him a bad lyricist

The most miserable person on this board by far. You make fun of any music you’ve never heard before for absolutely no reason at all.

Seriously though, why are you even in this thread? Shitting on music you’ve never heard before just makes you look ignorant.
It’s like your entire thought process is: “Hmmm… I’ve never heard of this before. Must suck. Let me post about it”

Seriously though, why are you even in this thread?
Why must you make it a Peyton vs Brady competition?
Do you honestly believe that are no songs from Dylan, Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, Ray Davies, Gerry Goffin, Howard Greenfield, Cynthia Weil, Doc Pomus, Jerry Leiber and all the other Brill Building writers et al, Smokey Robinson, Holland-Dozier-Holland etc etc etc that do not have better lyrics?
And that's just rock songwriters: "Hey man, nobody said we were better than Johnny Mercer". - Bob Dylan, 1980s
Why even frame the discussion that way?

I never said it was the best lyrical album of all time, I just said name a better one.
The purpose of this thread was for everyone to share albums that they think are lyrically exceptional, and maybe expose others to new music in the process.
So instead of making fun of an album you’ve never heard before, maybe share an album that you love that is lyrically exceptional, and in the meantime, you can listen to Ritter’s album or any other ones in here you’ve never heard. Or don’t. Just don’t be an arse about it.
That’s like the entire purpose of the music board. To discuss and discover music. It shouldn’t just be a circle-jerk of nostalgia.
And once again, how can you be so sure that Ritter’s lyrics don’t match up to the level of the names you listed? I think they do. So do a few other people.
What specifically makes you think he doesn’t belong in that category? Is it because you haven’t heard of him? Unfortunately, folk singers aren’t too big in the 21st century, so he’s not famous. Do you think new music is incapable of being quality?
Listen to “Another New World” that I linked above and tell me that isn’t a lyrical masterpiece
