"Wooly Bully", Cambodian style:

quote:

Ros Serey Sothea disappeared during the Khmer Rouge genocide and her exact fate has never been confirmed, with multiple sources making contradictory claims. For example, her sisters have alleged that Sothea is likely to have died immediately after the Khmer Rouge seized control of Cambodia in April 1975; as a famous entertainer with "western" influences, qualities widely known to be disdained by the Khmer Rouge, she would have been targeted for imprisonment or execution immediately.
quote:

Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll is a 2014 documentary film directed by John Pirozzi about Cambodian rock music in the 1960s and 1970s, and the impact of the Khmer Rouge regime and Cambodian genocide on the local music scene.

The pride of Benton Harbor Michigan, 1965. Everly imitators grasping their way toward folk rock & power pop.

They allegedly passed up $1M in bookings to stay in college (& avoid the draft)

The 1st time I saw this clip c. 10 yrs ago I thought it was some '80s revivalists in L.A. doing a brilliantly realized '60s pastiche

They were actually from Sweden. Allegedly they didn't speak English & learned the lyrics phonetically.

A song entitled Strangler in the Night is never going to be about hearts and flowers, but little did I know that what I was listening to when I first heard this track were the words of the alleged Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo. Narrated by Bostonian news reporter, Dick Levitan (who worked for talk show radio station WEEI), Strangler in the Night put Levitan together with local beat group, The Bugs to produce this song!

Another "Bitch, who needs you?" anthem, written for the Turtles by Warren Zevon, & covered by this Duluth MN garage band (1967)

Turtles' original (1966)

Zevon's version - same backling track as The Turtles (minus the organ solo); badly missing BG vocals

If the tune sounds familiar, it's based on a piece by Tchaikovsky, as heard here.

The BBC banned the Cougars' record on the grounds that it was "a travesty of a great piece of classical music".

A melange of styles: part power pop, part sunshine, w/a sike guitar solo

This was the flip. The unremarkable A side was written & produced by Stuart Margolin (Angel on The Rockford Files) & Murray Macleod (the Mexican deputy in Cahill w/John Wayne). MM was in The Parade, who had a top 20 hit w/"Sunshine Girl'
