Zappa meets the B-52s

quote:
The Driving Stupid were formed on the East Coast by college students, three of them longtime friends from New Jersey. As more of a lark than a serious endeavor, in the summer of 1966 they drove from New Jersey to Hollywood in an effort to crack the big time, stopping off in Albuquerque, New Mexico to record some demos.
They did manage to land a deal and record an album's worth of material in Hollywood, but the album didn't come out at the time, after the commercial death of the 45.
This unreleased material, like the single, combined sloppy garage band rock with self-consciously silly lyrics, like a garage group providing the soundtrack for a Z-grade horror-science fiction film.
Most of the Driving Stupid left Hollywood at the end of the summer of 1966 to return to college

Sagittarius - "Song To The Magic Frog (Will You Ever Know)" (1968)
There was once a Sunshine Pop thread. I would have put it there, but TD's delightful search function couldn't find it.
Studio group (rumored to include Glen Campbell). Usher produced classic albums by The Byrds & The Beach Boys. Boettcher had a gift for harmony arrangements. They both died of AIDS,

The Game - "The Addicted Man" (1966)
From Surrey, UK
That is one androgynous looking dude (?) out front

From Surrey, UK
quote:Also reminds me of the Move (who had yet to release a record) & The Who.
A record that caused a fire storm upon release around Christmas time of 1966. The Game's Addicted Man was intended as an anti-drug record, throwing light on the dark side of being a Mod; pills. But people took it as a pro-drug song, especially after it was played on Juke Box Jury and got slammed by the panel. The following week, EMI pulled the single, and original copies now change hands for a King's Ransom among collectors. Musically, this is along the lines of what The Creation were doing at the time

Now this is a record w/a curious background. Black soul singer on an R&B label, but it's a powerhouse garage rocker -- so awesome The MC5 covered it
And it was produced by countrypolitan kingpin Billy Sherrill (!!!)

Garage band The Bad Seeds doing "A Taste Of The Same" on 'Teen Time', KIII-TV ch 3 Corpus Christi (1966).
A rare surviving videotape (not kinescope) from this period. There is not much actual video from any local TV in the mid '60s, much less a teen dance show.

David McWilliams - "The Days of Pearly Spencer" (1967)
Made #1 in France, but curiously didn't chart in his native UK
