You have to realize too, that just because they’ve got serious buzz now, doesn’t mean they’re actually great. People may like certain aspects of them, but because of things (some out of their control) their audience will fade out, like, no fresh material, maybe it wasn’t that great in the first place, etc., you might just be at the point where you’ve listened to enough music to know what’s brilliant and what isn’t before a lot of other people do. That’s what I see with a LOT of these “buzz artists”, they do a few good things but their music is lacking in other aspects and at my age it’s glaring to me that those shortcomings are there.

The names you mentioned now are some of the biggest names in music history. I wasn’t around for the Doors and Bob Dylan and stuff. But I can imagine if I were, and there were a site with new acts like that, for every Bob Dylan there’d be 1000 bullshite acts that suck that no one has heard of nowadays because they weren’t that great but they might have been good in some ways.

Cowboy Mouth was like that for me in high school. The music was “almost good” but there just wasn’t enough substance for it to be any more than a local hometown hero type band for me. But I really liked it at the time because it had certain things I liked, just not enough to where it was any more than a “fad” type for me. And I suspect for many others.

Some people are just pickier than others too. And some just refuse to “open their ears” a little more to newer sounds that build on the traditions but bring a new modern age to it. I would definitely suggest being open to that. Meaning, give stuff a chance and don’t just turn it off. You also have to understand you grew up with these artists playing on the radio constantly and you had no choice but to listen to them and “delve” into the music even sub-consciously. All music has some level of acquired taste in it. Some more than others but still, it’s ALL acquired to a certain extent. Radio forced you to acquire certain tastes and not just turn shite off immediately.

TL;DR - give stuff a chance and don’t overthink and be OK with the fact that you might have picky ears but if there’s music you like from then there is 100% music you would like today.

The song formulas, auto tune, and computers ruined music that we hear on the radio. Congrats on not having the musical taste of an 11 year old girl.

Really embrace Spotify radio for artists you like and you’ll find some gems in there.

Vowws has really been doing it for me lately. I think that was a pivot from Nine Inch Nails or Ministry radio.
