I think some folks have some seriously unrealistic expectations over what this band should be doing night after night.
Phish is nothing more than a nostalgia act these days. And there's nothing wrong with that. I've caught 4 or 5 shows over the past few years, and they're still more fun than most any other show I've been to in that same span. Some of it is just the nostalgia of seeing them so much in my 20's in the mid-90's, and now that I'm in my 40's I can sort of re-live my youth for 3 or 4 hours. I don't go in expecting to be blown away, though Page destroying the ivory in Maze will always blow me away. There will never be a 2nd set like 11/14/95 again, and that's okay.
I do agree some of the superfans have unrealistic expectations.

Trey has been guilty of that, but I wouldn't lay it entirely on his shoulders. At that Charlotte '12 show, Page pulled out of the Bowie jam early, right when it seemed like Trey was about to stomp on the gas pedal.
But overall, when I go back and listen to the shows, those "moments" are still there IMO, they're just dispersed into more songs. It's not too unlike the '94 era in that regard... but yeah, on occasion it'd be nice to hear them take it as far as they possibly can...

I get where you're coming from. I've only seen 3 shows in person post-hiatus/3.0, and I'm just happy to be there for the most part. I wouldn't go as far as calling them a nostalgia act 'tho, simply because they're still adding new songs to the itinerary on a regular basis, unlike a typical nostalgia act.
At the end of the day, yeah, my go-to shows are usually from the 90's (mostly '97), but they're still capable of wowing me (Charlotte '11 was a heater IMO)...

Not only does any era of Phish blow WSP out of the water, Phish could finish their own set and then play a set of all-WSP tunes, and blow them out of the water all over again....
gtfo of here. Trey and gordon fricking suck at singing. holy god a live sugar shack would be worse than scratching a chalkboard. Schools blows gordon out of the way in any aspect of bass you'd like to speak of. I'll give phish drums and keys are a wash. its two different styles of music. this is like comparing GD and ABB. Both are great in their own right but arent really comparable.
ETA: "artsy" photos of 12 year old girls are NOT included in my assessment. Then and only then would Gordon get the nod.

WSP is too complex for them... They just don't "get" it

Twiddle....harbingers of the Boulder White Boy Struggle. They get the sads when the dispensaries close early, their girlfriends go lezzy, or dads check is late in the mail...
On topic, anyone seen Heady lately??? Did he get a new handle?

Their first three studio albums are legit good, but as an elite jamband, nah. I "get" them just fine, and I've seen plenty of shows by 'em, including NYE 94 & 96, and countless times in clubs. They were a good, fun band until they started believing they were a "jamband", then it was all downhill...

They weren't a jam band. They were a college rock band that scared all the hippies away. Then, the jam scene started coming to them.
