They must enjoy fighting.

Exactly. A post rock jam band. I'm glad you agree. There are electronic, metal, folk, post rock, country, blues, psychedelic rock and many other genres that feature extended musical improvisation ("jams"). Both post rock and jam band are genres attributed to Mogwai. They are awesome, BTW.
this is beyond retarded man. So any band that improvises any amount live is a "jam band"? That's ridiculous.
I play in 2 rock and roll bands and we may extend the ending of a song or two live if we feel like it.
That doesn't make us a jam band.
Jesus christ people

Exactly. A band that routinely improvs during live shows could be labeled a jam band.
ETA: Post some youtubes of your bands performances please

Using that logic, sonic youth is a jam band.
Green day is a jam band.
Mutemath is a jam band.
Guns and roses were a jam band.
Radiohead is a jam band.
It's really, really stupid. I thought you were smarter than that?

Jam bands are musical groups whose albums and live performances relate to a fan culture that originated with the 1960s groups such as the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band. This jam band environment continued in the 1990s with bands like Phish.[1] The performances of these bands often feature extended musical improvisation ("jams") over rhythmic grooves and chord patterns and long sets of music that cross genre boundaries.[2]
While the seminal group Grateful Dead were originally categorized as psychedelic rock,[3] by the 1990s the term "jam band" was used for groups playing a variety of genres, including those outside of rock such as funk, progressive bluegrass, and jazz fusion. The term is also used for some groups playing blues, country music, folk music, world music, and electronic music.[2]

How is a band that routinely improves in concert, not a jam band?

quote:Cool, so you've jammed before. I don't think that makes you a jamband, much like covering a Snoop song one time on Halloween doesn't make you a rap group. However, to deny that Mogwai doesn't improv. live for extended periods and blend genres is ridiculous. They are most certainly a modern jam band.

Radiohead is a jam band.
Why? I have seen Radiohead countless times and also have a ton of AUDs of their shows and have never heard them improv ONCE.

This thread is gonna make my head explode. Speaking of jam bands, I am listening to "Yes". Would you guys say that's one of the first ever jam bands?

improv isn't the only factor. It's not an improv band. It's a jam band, and Radiohead does not jam.

Thanks for linking the history of the jam bands from Wikipedia.

By the late 1990s the number of types of bands and their fans had grown so that the term's use became quite broad
quote:
What Is a Jam Band?
Please cast aside any preconceptions that this phrase may evoke. The term, as it is commonly used today, references a rich palette of sounds and textures. These groups share a collective penchant for improvisation, a commitment to songcraft and a propensity to cross genre boundaries
quote:
jam bands of today are unified by the nimble ears of their receptive listeners
quote:
At this point, what you sing about, what instruments you play, how often you tour and how old you are has become virtually irrelevant. At this point, one thing is left and, ironically, after all these years, it’s the single most important place one should focus on; the approach to the music. And the jamband or improvisational umbrella, essentially nothing more than a broad label for a diverse array of bands, is open wide enough to shelter several different types of bands
quote:
Many of today's jam bands have brought widely varied genres into the scene. A jam band festival may include bands with electronic, folk rock, blues-rock, jazz fusion, psychedelic rock, southern rock, progressive rock, acid jazz, hip hop, hard rock, and bluegrass sounds.

Then you clearly don't understand what a jamband is.
Mogwai is a Scottish post rock band ala sonic youth.
