Beatles production and engineering was also heads and tails ahead of everyone.
Yep. Some of their tunes sound almost like they could have been from today.

It's hard now even for people that are hugely into Beatles history to truly have a sense of how insane it was.
Even my you-have-a-bedtime dad allowed us to stay up and catch their first live Ed Sullivan show.

Might not mean that much to you but that was huge for a pre-teen in my house.

The Stones' 1966-1967 Brian Jones-led pop singles out-did the Beatles.

* Dandelions
* Shes Like a Rainbow
* Mother' Little Helper
* 19th Nervous Breakdown
* Paint It Black
* Ruby Tuesday

I saw that critique as well.

I did hear a one on one interview he did with Matt Hurwitz about 10 years ago, that seemed to be quite different from his book. I think there's still a transcript of it on YouTube.

Ken Scott kind of backed McCartney's and Emerick"s claim about Harrison being mostly absent during a lot of Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour.

Actually if you watch Peter Jackson's "Get Back", Emerick was pretty spot on about George struggling with writing "Something". He said that Lennon should have been given 3/4s of the songwriting credit on it.

Geoff probably thought of all of the hours of the nonsensical “Mister Show, oh Mister Show” prior. To give one example. Emerick said that George ended up taking a lot John's and Paul's ideas and lyrics to form the album "All Things Must Pass".

The same way that Ringo, John, and George thought about Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is probably how Geoff thought of George overall.

I'll counter that with:

* Eleanor Rigby
* Paperback Writer
* Rain
* Strawberry Fields Forever
* Penny Lane
* Yellow Submarine
* I Am The Walrus
* All You Need Is Love
* With A Little Help From My Friends
* Hello Goodbye

For pure unforgettable pop greatness that still endures till this day? The Stones' singles easily outshone the Beatles (imo) from that era.

A few of those Beatles singles during 1966-1967 were good at the time, but their mission was to smash their early style to pieces by reinventing themselves into psychedelic avant-garde innovators. With mixed results.

I will give the nod to the Beatles for better '66-67' albums and less filler (always the Stones' problem )

The Stones weren't even close to doing anything as inventive and daring in the studio as The Beatles.

Didn't necessarily make them better for it.

On the contrary, I always ask people your age for their account of this night. Please say more...

And you win.

And why are we limiting it to just that list? The Beatles list goes on and on.

Stones median songer is filler. Beatles median song is a classic.

It wasn't obvious that it could or would...but it most certainly did.

'66-'67 time-frame.

As I noted -- yup, Stones' albums were by and large filler. Except for their single gems.

Beatles entire albums were far more listenable c. '66-'67.

Who did the better job in 1968? The Stones or Beatles?

Not sure

I didn't start the thread.

I would guess the Stones' biggest "pop period" was from 65-67. ...and although they were huge at that time, I still believe the Beatles were "better".

Now, an argument can certainly be made that when the Stones transitioned more to blues rock in '68 (Beggars Banquet...) they were the best "rock band" around.

Ftr, after watching Peter Jackson's "Get Back", I still think the Beatles were a bit better.
