I think melody and emotion are very important when composing a solo.
those are two things that I listen for when I hear a solo. That's why I don't care for most of EVH's solos.
Tone is another. If a solo fits like another line of lyrics, it's usually good--to me.

"Mr. Crowley" may be the most complete, most tasteful and best composed solo ever
I've always liked the outro solo much more.
Aside from his tone in the studio, everything Rhoads did was brilliant. There are probably a handful of guys that can balance technical mastery, melody, tastefulness, & flash in their playing. He was one.

SRV'so rendition of Little Wing
I could listen to that constantly... Almost.
It is awesome. Melds what he did into Hendrix very well.
Always loved Clapton in MTV unplugged. Does SO MUCH with an old Martin. May as well have been an electric. OF course that "old Martin" was one of THE Martin's right? A holy Grail Martin I believe.

It might not be the best or among the top 10, but no solo makes me do stupid shite better than Mr Brownstone. If I pair a snowboard/MLB run with that song, I feel invincible when he makes the key change(not sure if that's the correct term) in the middle.
Sometimes it doesn't end up so well.

Buck's solo on this live version of Veterans is in my opinion the best solo ever.
Buck is so underrated
Does great job on Then Came the Last Days of May
They're ok the last days of may, I'll be breathing dry air
I'm leaving soon, the others are already there
You wouldn't be interested in coming along, instead of staying here
They say the west is nice this time of year, that's what they say

"Crossroads" by Cream, live at winterland 1968. One of Clapton's benchmark moments.

Glenn Frey seemed particularly proud of it on the documentary.
Glenn Frey seems like he was an a-hole when he was young and it doesn't seem like much has changed.

I've always enjoyed this song and Richard Thompson's solo starting at 4:29.
Video from a different concert.

One of my personal Favorites of all-time
Monte Montgomery - When Will I (Austin City Limits)
His instrumental version of Little Wing is pretty damn good too.

Even though it is a duel and triple lead guitar solo, Free Bird is pretty darn iconic, even if most everyone is tired of hearing it.

Agreed. Also, Frey fired Randy Meisner for not wanting to sing the high notes on "Take it to the Limit," saying that he would sing the song himself. Either way, they play it without the high notes now.
