I agree. Based on OP's "open playing field" guidelines, though:
1. David Gilmour - been at it for 50 years and seems to be getting better, if that's possible
2. Jimmy Page
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Eric Clapton
5. Mark Knopfler
Next would be Eddie Van Halen and Carlos Santana.
Google the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" and note who's in the top 40 or so!! Just a suggestion...
Great thread.

read the whole thread, glad to see as reflected in most all time lists that Hendrix is undoubtedly the best. When ya consider how brief his career was and how many sounds he developed that had never even been heard before it's phenomenal.
Coincidentally I watched his Woodstock performance last night for the first time in a few years. It isn't his best ever. While watching it though I thought 'this is like a god coming down to earth to share his glory'. Besides guitarist he had to be one of the coolest MFers in history.
Lesee, I add
-Satriani for technique
-Buddy Guy, surprised to not see his name- technique, tone, and a long successful career
-Clapton for encompassing a lifetime of work covering a lot of territory. Never got hemmed in.
after that most all have some footnotes,
-Page, brilliant innovator and historical legend but the fire din't burn so bright in the past decades
-Beck, kinda the opposite of Page, might make Mt Rushmore of Guitar for such a long rich body of work
-Vaughn, so tragic, he was going from Mt Rushmore to the Pantheon. Saw him weeks before his death
Who's on the way...
-Warren Haynes following in the footsteps of the gods
-kinda a different one for me is Josh Homme more for riffs and song writing

2 pages of thread before SRV was mentioned makes this thread illegitimate.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jimmy Page
I don't know, there are a lot of great guitarists, but those two stand out to me.

AlxTiger -- James Burton from Shreveport was Ricky Nelson's guitar player who went to Elvis for the rest of his live career. He's in all the Elvis Concert DVD's , Elvis talks to him on stage a lot. The bass player was from Baton Rouge, was in the Basement Wall in the late 60's when I was in the Monks. Burton has a night club/restaurant in Shreveport now. Played that pink tele.

Based on the lack of love for Duane Allman, I think people need to listen to more of his work. Most know of his jams with ABB, but his studio work and time with clapton produced unreal slide work.
Amazing that he was that good before he turned 24 and has been dead for over 40 years, but lots of critics still have him in top 10 to ever pick up a guitar.

While Allman may have been a fine guitarist, Clapton has said many, many times SRV was the best guitarist he had ever seen.....and I agree.
I play, I have seen some of the best live and IMO, there has never been a better guitarist than SRV. But I'm not Clapton.....so take his word for it.
The closest thing to SRV's knowledge of the fretboard is Eric Johnson.

Clapton also said Duane Allman is the musical brother he never had. He always spoke highly of him despite their short time together. But during that 1 month they recorded one of the greatest guitar rock albums in history.
Fyi, I do respect SRV immensely, but I prefer the sound of Duane, buddy, and Eric better. Just a personal opinion
