Says move was "total shock"
He had that quote from a few weeks ago that made it sound like he was expecting changes on his staff. Cal has been out there, something has to have happened with Thibs availability.
quote:
As Rose makes an inspired return to a playoff stage that desperately missed him, Thibodeau is pushing closer to the end of his run here. This wasn't on his mind on Monday after a 99-92 Game 1 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers; only winning. Only the opportunity now. Rose is becoming Rose again, slowly, surely, but the progression's unmistakable. It changes everything for Chicago, except this: Amid the twisted culture of Chicago's regime – where winning is losing, where success is failure – management can't wait to rid itself of one Tom Thibodeau.

It definitely sounds like a toxic situation over there.
quote:
When a visiting scout visited the Bulls practice facility in the past year or so, he had the opportunity to watch the awkward, strange interplay between Bulls general manager Gar Forman and Thibodeau. Eventually, the man walked into the office of an assistant coach and asked: "What the hell is the deal here?"
Before answering, the coach turned his fan on full blast. For the visitor, everything was becoming even stranger. He gave the assistant a befuddled look, as though to say, "What are you doing?"
"I'm not taking any chances," the coach said, refusing to risk the possibility of those walls being bugged.

Dell's pressers are usually pretty boring and he really won't say much.
I'll give you cliff notes from the future:
Monty is a great coach but we just felt it was time to go in another direction. He'll get a HC job elsewhere.
We don't have a HC picked out yet and will begin the process shortly.
There are many great candidates.
Will deny that they didn't see eye to eye for the most part and just say they are going in another direction.
Won't directly say what they are looking for in a coach.
The end.

Can I borrow your time machine?
Sounds about perfect.

I should have used it on the winning powerball numbers but I'm out of Plutonium now.

I'd love to hear a "tell-all" on their relationship. Such a weird duo/situation with Monty being hired first, and now being fired, as well as their perceived differences in playing styles.

Monty basically hired Demps. Ownership was in transition and Hugh Weber was running things more or less so Monty was the basketball guy.

And speculation among rival teams and coaching industry sources immediately turned to a head coach who is still employed: the Bulls' Tom Thibodeau, who was a candidate for the New Orleans job when the team hired Williams.
...If Thibodeau and the Bulls, indeed, part ways, it would set off shockwaves in the coaching business. Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg is widely believed to be the Bulls' preferred replacement
So maybe Chicago has something worked out with Hoiberg making Thibs available?

I think I'd rather Hoiberg but Thibs would turn AD, Asik and Jrue into a great defensive team

You just have to be wary of all of the "Thibs grinds players into dust" stuff that you hear.
AD and Jrue aren't exactly the pictures of health.

You'd have to think they would discuss those things before they'd hire him.

My.
Life.
Monty fired, Demps retained, Thibs rumored to be a top candidate. Your life seems better than it did a few hours ago. Maybe Dumars doesn't make a bad advisor.

Yeah, which is why I said it was a weird situation from the get-go. How many HCs basically hire their own GM?

I know Dumars and Draymond Green are close. Maybe he can talk Draymond into coming to the Pels? I know there is no shot in that happening, but it would be awesome.

It would make an interesting sports documentary one day.

What if I told you the head coach was hired before the GM....

Having someone other than Loomis providing actual basketball insight into our front office is a big deal it seems.
