In a stunning development, a top NBA official said teams’ general practice of resting players to prevent future injury and extend careers — commonly known as “load management,” a term ingrained into the lexicon of the sport over the past several years as some of the biggest stars missed huge amounts of games — is no longer supported by scientific data held by the league.

“Before, it was a given conclusion that the data showed that you had to rest players a certain amount, and that justified them sitting out,” Joe Dumars, executive vice president of basketball operations for the NBA, said.

“We’ve gotten more data, and it just doesn’t show that resting, sitting guys out correlates with lack of injuries, or fatigue, or anything like that,” Dumars said. “What it does show is maybe guys aren’t as efficient on the second night of a back to back.”

Probably but they also don't want players to do it anymore so of course they're going to say that.

Good, these superstars not taking the regular season seriously is bad for the league. On top of that, how frustrating is it for some to miss several games for load management, then get hurt right before or during the playoffs? What’s the point of load management in that case?

NBA is finally putting there (their?) foot down and calling these guys out. Load management became an excuse for guys to miss games. Some players even saw it as a status symbol apparently.

A lot of it comes from the teams though. It started with the Spurs, who were a dynasty and had older players. Maybe when you play 9 months every year instead of 7, and have older players, load management helps. But all pro sports leagues are copycat leagues, so load management became something most teams did.

If the data isn't there to support it, hopefully they'll go away from it. I tend to agree with the old school view that the regular workload hardens the body, and the lighter work load doesn't.

I would love to see the data. Being an NBA fan, I sure as hell know that it seems players miss much more time now. That is both because of injury and because of load management. I am happy to see the pendulum start to swing the other way.

Honestly the missed time by players are mostly American players and not European players. I blame this on grassroots basketball and AAU, where kids at 7 years old are traveling the country putting wear and tear on their bodies and constantly getting injured. Barkley said it best AAU basketball has ruined the NBA.
