I also recal they were 4 top qb's in the 1970 draft. Archie, Jim Plunkett out of Stanford, Rex Kern out of Ohio state and I cant remember the fourth name

Dan Pastorini of the Houston Oilers. Might be misspelled.

yeah, Pastorini definitely, but I think former Cincy great Ken Anderson was another, anyways, it was a great year for QB's.

as for Rex Kern, don't know who the hell he was, did he play QB in the NFL?

I wouldn't put him in the HOF but as I posted earlier, those teams were so terrible it is hard to guage how good he really was. I'd say this, if there would have been free agency then he would have been a hot commodity. He was respected beyond NOLA that he would have garnered more than a Cutler trade.

Archie Manning

1974: 3-8 record, 6/16 TD/INT, Benched for Bobby Scott and Larry Cipa

1975: 2-11 record, 7/20 TD/INT, Benched for Larry Cipa

1976: Out for Season, Bobby Douglass and Bobby Scott split season

1977: 1-8 record, 8/9 TD/INT, Benched for Bobby Scott and Bobby Douglas

That was just plain awful. 6-27 over a span of 4 years with a pitiful TD/INT ratio. You can't blame all of that on bad teams. JaMarcus Russell's stats aren't that bad, and that stretch began with Archie's 4th year in the league.

Don't get me wrong. Archie is my favorite player, but he was on the verge of getting run out of town before Dick Nolan showed up.

I probably just blame a little more of it on bad teams than you do. Remember how David Carr was pummeled to start his career? That's what I think of Archie. He was sacked 186 times in his first 5 years- and he was very mobile. He was running for his life. As said, he was playing for a HC (North) that did not know who OJ Simpson was, seriously! If other guys would have come in and done better he would never have the place in Saints hearts that he does. But they were worse when inserted. The fact that he became a Pro Bowler when they got a real coach shows it more team than him to me.

Not pushing him for HOF but after those gawd awful first few years it is amazing he amounted to anything at all (ala David Carr).

I'll take a different angle. Bust or not, I still remember my Cajun grandfather sitting in his chair screaming at the television and his horrible football team, circa 1976, all the while adoring the efforts of Archie. He was loved. Fans see effort, don't they?!

yeah, I think that was a culprit in a lot of the old timers passin away, listening to Saints games and going into cardiac arrest.

Tigerjeff is 100% on target. greatest Saint ever. Could scramble and throw on the run off the wrong foot. if only he had an offensive line... etc.

Single handed (well, with some help from Coach Mac) kept LSU from being undefeated in 1969, Hillman's senior year.

With the right team, Manning would be in HOF. Gave it his all. When Bum traded him I wanted to throw up. With everything he gave to the Saints, he deserved to finish his career in NO.

Your Uncle is confusing Archie Manning with the Saints, which was the biggest NFL Fanchise Bust in history.

Just think what Archie could have done under a coach like Bill Walsh and a organization like the 49'ers.

Fortuantly, Archie's kids went to quality organizations, unlike the Saints back then.

Archie was a great player on a shitty team. He was Offensive Player of Year in 1978, I believe.

Jack Lambert once said Archie would be in the HOF if he just played on an average football team.

One of the favorite things I read was that he was injured and on the bench when a fight broke out on the field and he ran out there and joined in. When the ref tried to throw him out he replied "You can't throw me out of the game, I'm not playing!". I read that in one of my Saints books I think, either that or Manning.
