just chiming in...
Seems like there is decent consensus among most of the regulars here... they got the best they could. My anticipation was a a mid 3rd Rd pick. As far as being a 2008 Pro Bowler, PB is a joke and he was as much of a joke selection as Roy Williams the safety was in '08
... doesn't mean shite. (7 holding penalties in '08 btw)
factors:
-We do not know the lowdown on JB health wise like the team does. I would have been extremely disappointed if they would have signed him long term. I think he is that great of a health risk. This is the essence of this move. 3-4 big years for the Skins then you can say bad move. Injured in preseason or underperforming, sucking up some major cap space for a few years, then you can eat some crow.
-Do not discount team chemistry. Payton knows the type players he wants and that will continue the current direction. Any of the statements and the videos I have seen of JB makes me doubt if he fits the mold for the Saints dynasty future. I think moving him to get rid of the distraction in camp had to be an issue. If he wasn't going to be the future he wasn't gonna start. If he wasn't starting it had only disruption potential.
-Do not discount Charles Brown. If not for the injury issues many had him pegged as a Top 20 LT pick. He's prolly got a better skill set and more NFL ready than Bushrod was after 2 years in. Ideally he would step up after learning the ropes for a year. It is entirely possible they have seen enough already to feel he either can legitimately contend as a starter already or are not afraid to give him the shot if Bushrod went down or did not progress.

zombie, something tells me this thread along with the other needs to get saved so we can see how truly "pathetic" this deal was later
agreed. i don't think Brown will play a full season. has he ever for us? when draft time rolls around, we will all be like "oh cool, we have an extra pick. i forgot about that"

I still remember the guns to the head portion of last year's draft for trading up to get a punter. A PUNTER

So, while my first reaction was...wtf, are you kidding me, when I saw the compensation, but then thought about some of the other decisions Payton and co. have made, and I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing.
exactly how i felt. i'm not going to bash the FO for trading a player who spent the entire year on IR

So, tying for the league lead in 2008 with 7 holding penalties proves that he is not a holding machine?
so 1 season defines his whole career here?
He had 2 in 05, 3 in 06, and 3 in 07 while making 2 pro bowls

So what if he made the probowl? How many players this year made it? For some positions, I think they got to like the 3rd alternate.
How many Vikings made the probowl that deserved it? It's all fan voting.

Pro Bowl is bullshite, but he was an ALL PRO left tackle. All Pro is AP voted and is pretty legit.

yeah, and we had the best offense in the league, had a prolific running game, and we won the superbowl....all without him touching the field

Absolutely, which is why I feel the same way as the Saints do: they can do it with Bushrod. But I look at 4 games: Dolphins, Cowboys, Vikings, and Colts. In 2.5 of those games, he got schooled. Against the Vikings and the Colts when Freeney wore down, he played adequately, but needed help. The way I see Brown, mark him down for a hold in each of those games, but they wouldn't have given him nearly as much help as they gave Bushrod.
Yet again, I really like Bushrod. The problem is he too is in the last season of his contract and if he plays well, I think the Saints drafted Charles Brown to take over regardless as they will soon have to pay Brees, Nicks, and Porter. So the WAAAAAAAYYY overlooked aspect of keeping Brown is this: he plays better than Bushrod could have, but keeping Bushrod on the bench for the year KILLS Bushrod's value. If he sits on the bench for a year, we can probably get him for a 2 or 3 year deal, $2m per year type contract. If he comes in and plays fairly well, you can double or triple that cost and make it a 4 or 5 year deal.

Left tackle was our 2nd biggest weekend last year besides dt.
We won the super bowl without being able to stop the run, does that mean it wasn't an issue?
