I don't think anyone said use the 1st pick. If he is around in the 3rd-4th I could see Payton pulling the trigger on a RB/FB, not necessarily Gerhart, but someone for depth. You could do a lot worse than the Heisman runner-up, if he's available.

gerhart is noted for not much receiving experience

As far as mentioning Heisman runner-up, that could be no less meaningful.

Some Heisman runnerup history-

2002 Brad Banks Iowa
2000 Josh Heupel Okla
1999 Joe Hamilton Ga Tech
1998 Michael Bishop K St
1996 Troy Davis Iowa St
1995 Tommy Frazier Nebraska
1994 Ki-Jana Carter Penn St
1993 Danny Shuler Fla
1991 Casey weldon Fla St
1990 Rocket Ismail Notre Sucks
1989 Anthony Thompson Indiana

2004: Adrian Peterson
2005: Vince Young
2006: Darren McFadden
2007: Darren McFadden x2
2008: Colt McCoy

off subject. the more i think about it.. the more i believe mccoy will be successful in the nfl.

-I'd MAYBE take him as a 3rd-4th round pick if he showed the ability to catch the ball

-Anyone thinking we're gonna cut/trade Hamilton has shite for brains. The guy is our go-to short-yardage back and he's probably our best STs player (Roby is probably tied).

-I just pray Bowman is still available at 32.

Why waste a draft pick on a RB?
Pierre Thomas - Rookie Free Agent, starter. Hamilton - Rookie Free Agent, contributor.
Mike Bell - Free Agent, contributor.
Antonio Pittman - 4th Round Pick, not on team.

Gerhart would make for a great addition to our running back corps. He would add versatility to the type of backs we have now. He's young healthy and runs with a lot of force. He would make a great compliment with PT and Reggie.

And for the folks putting hamilton in the same sentence with gerhart... playa please.

No one is putting Hamilton in the same sentence as Gerhart when it comes to purely running the football. However, does Gerhart play special teams? Will he make as little as Hamilton? Football is about value and Hamilton is about as valuable of a football player as it comes.

I'm sure Gerhart would be just as effective of special teamer as Hamilton. And you're acting like Hamilton was a special team ace for us... We got many of those before you get to Hamilton's name... Roby, Reis, Evans, Dunbar...

And you're talking value now... oh geez... Hamilton can still be 4 on the depth chart...

PT
Bush
Gerhart
Hamilton

You are missing the point. Not a position of NEED. Especially in this uncapped year where we have FA restrictions.

Chicken man frick!

Oh well... well listen. Gerhart would be a tremendous pickup for our ball club because we still lack the Caucasian presence in the back field that runs with the emotion and violence to equally match our city. If the Saints truly had the ability to light up the passing game at will and truly had the ability to pound the rock at will, we could win the super bowl... for realz this time.
