The Detroit Lions could be signing a kicker today or Saturday if they determine Jason Hanson’s surgically repaired knee is not ready to handle partial or full duties.
Coach Jim Schwartz was evasive on the issue following practice on Thursday. A day earlier, he said he was optimistic that Hanson could handle field goal duties at New Orleans in the season opener. That, of course, doesn’t address the issue of kickoffs.
The Lions cut veteran Billy Cundiff last weekend. Previous coaches have said they would not use punter Nick Harris for kickoffs or field goals when injuries made Hanson’s availability a question.
Maybe it’s not a big deal, but Schwartz doesn’t want to see a 17-game losing streak turn to 18 on the foot of a kicker, or a fill-in kicker.

from Detroit TV...
In the preseason, the Lions showed some of the same woes as a year ago -- poor tackling, giving up big plays and getting little to no pressure on opposing quarterbacks. All of that spells disaster.
When you look at the 2009 schedule, it looks as if the Lions have a chance to win three games. That's not a guarantee, just a chance.
It's hard to assume the Lions will beat any good teams because they haven't in recent years. Coming into the season, they have lost 17 straight games and 23 of their last 24. On the road, the Lions have won just six games in the last eight seasons. The numbers are just mindboggling.
Here's how the season will probably play out.
They get drilled in the opener by Saints QB Drew Brees. They will not be able to stop him defensively. They could easily lose by 21 points.

With PT definitely sitting they will likely activate P.J. Hill. I'd love to see him get some carries and do good. Bell, Hamilton, and he to me are still "potentially" good. Those three becoming legitimately good will add a lot to the success of the team.
Nice trivia I read somewhere- Darren Sharper has more interceptions against the Lions than any other player in history.
Lagniappe- New Orleans' receivers had sixty-six 20+ yard catches and 2,398 "yards after catch" in 2008 -- both numbers were best of any team in football last season.
