In 15 seasons of play, he threw for more TDs than INTs twice, 1980 23/20, and 1978 17/16.

For his career he had a 125/173 TD to INT ratio.

He seemed to not be able to throw the ball away instead of taking sacks. And when he would, it often ended up in the wrong hands.

That happens when your line deteriorates at the snap.

Archie was an excellent athlete that had the misfortune of playing for very poor teams...Who's to say if he had been drafted by the Steelers instead of Bradshaw that he wouldn't have been sporting 4 SB rings...I think I have heard Bradshaw himself make that statement...

Archie is probably the most overrated player ever. He was completely average. Nothing special what so ever. Both his sons are better than he ever was.

yeah you were born in 1976, you don't know jack shite.

If anyone wants to know how good Archie was, just look at what his peers had to say.

Another thing I would be willing to bet that never in league history has a MVP came from a team with a losing record as he was in 1978 with a 7-9 Saints team.

This is what I want to know: Was he really that great of a QB or was he just mired in mediocrity because of who he had around him? Honest opinions please.

Great QB. Had a supporting cast only one of many years that he was with the saints. That year he had Stram as a coach, muncie and galbreath at rb's, wes chandler at wr, and henry childs at TE. 1978 or 79 i think. we had the top rated offense in the league but no defense. Greg Williams was still in hs

Bum phillips traded archie to houston for ken stabler. I think bum wanted to show who was in control. from houston he spent a couple of years with the vikings

Are Gary Cuozzo and Ken Stabler immediately associated with the Saints when thier names are mentioned? No. And neither should Archie Manning's name be so associated. All three men are now alike in that they are former Saint quarterbacks who no longer associate themselves with the franchise.

Stabler, couzzo and kilmer are off some where else now archie still lives in NO and did radio broadcasts for the saints for years with jim henderson (replaced by hokie when petyon went pro). What are kilmer, cuozzo and stabler doing now? Stabler (I think) is doing radio broadcasts for gump football

I know most of us are LSU fans also so i hope the ones blaming the O-line for Archie struggle(which i believe too), aren't the same guys on the rant that say Jefferson should be all-sec behind his line

Actually Dick Nolan was the coach during his best years 78 &79. Saints were the pick to win the west going into 1980. Now take it consideration the Rams won it in 79 and made it to the super bowl against the steelers. So the saints were very highly regarded. We all know what happened they lost alot of close games early and the wheels came off. after the season we all found out that the team was infested with cocaine heads.

He is like the "fish that got away story" every time you tell it, the fish gets a little bigger. Just like Archie, the more people talk about him the better he gets. I don't care how bad the teams were back then he should have made them better if he was as good as people make him out to be.

True. But what did Brees achieve with the Chargers? Did he suck then? Or are the Saints a better cast of players?
