doesn't have NFL speed

Tell that to Mississippi state punt coverage. He was a starter at CB as a freshman. People forget that. 4.5 40 speed is pretty damn good. If he can run back punts and cover man up. With his size he will be a great DB or WLB

There's some LSU homerism that puts too much sugar in some fans drafting kool aid. There is also a segment that is too reactionary negatively just cuz of LSU as well. Real saints fans don't care if they are from there, Alabama, USC, or Bloomsburg.

Jones is definitely strong over free with potential as WLB. A helluva lot of athletic potential. If he wanted NFL over MLB another year could have cemented him as a 1st Rder.

Very similar though is Taylor Mays. Would have been a high first rounder last year. Prolly noted as one of the biggest name fallers this year though. Now a questionable safety and possible WLB prospect in the late first, maybe even 2nd Rd.

I love LSU and the Saints, but I still think jones is highly overrated. He doen't know how to wrap up and tackle, wants to lay the big hit way too much

In the NFL even strong safeties need to be able to cover.

I loved Chad at LSU, but he can't cover NFL talent (to a point a few sentences down).

I actually think he has the speed, he just doesn't have good technique.

All that said, to say this.... The above doesn't cut it for 1st or 2nd round draft picks - sorry if that offends you

after the 2nd round Chad is a nice pick up. Not before - no since in paying him 1st or 2nd round money.

And as far as the Saints go, no we don't need another Safety, our #1 pick last year was a safety and don't forget about Chip Vaughn who we drafted last year either.

Chip is 6'1 221lbs and runs a 4.51 (combine time)

so we basically already have Chad Jones, we drafted him in the 4th round last year

Chad is a "project" guy in the NFL.

I think the guy maybe would've had a better baseball career....but he wouldn't make near the money.

At least on this board (if not this thread), I've seen people say he's 1st round material. But I've also seen folks scared to take him in the 4th.

If you are directing your comments to the people who want Jones really early in the draft, then I agree.

i'm a MUCH, MUCH bigger LSU fan than Saints fan, and i think Jones is overrated b/c he still struggles greatly in coverage at times.

I wouldn't take him before the 6th round

When I started this thread I never said he was a must have, in fact I said the opposite. But he has every tool to play in the pros, he just needs help in coverage. That being said, I think he would move to lb where he would likely be covering slower guys, like TE.
And as far as drafting lsu players, anyone that knows football at all, understands there is talent everywhere. But it's still fun to watch guys like Henderson making crazy touchdown catches, reppin the state and LSU.

Dude, we have 2 all Pro safeties. Chad J is a nice college safety. NO ONE is a can't miss prospect. There are many many things that go into being a good safety in the pros. One on one skills are a must and Chad and many others have to prove they are capable of all aspects of the game.
There are probably 20 guys in the NFL with better than Sharper's 40 times or strength charts or verticals etc, but look how there are only 2 or 3 guys that are considered his equal.

Look at Landry, he can hit like a truck, but the Saints tore him up in his coverage skills.

Pros is not college! Saints fans do not HAVE to love LSU guys in their system just because they love LSU.

he's going to be another laron landry..physical but will get burnt a lot with double moves.

Jones is more athletic than Laron. He plays the ball in the air has sure hands. Laron is a thug who just trys to lay people out. Chad is a hard working all-around athlete. I truly believe, without p and g glasses on, that he will start one day in the pros.

ETA: I think if he gains 30 lbs and moves to WLB he could be an all-pro.

May be true, but that doesn't make him a good draft for the Saints and that doesn't make Saints fans HATERS of LSU!!!!! Which is exactly what this thread is/was about.

Bad way to talk about it using the fans as targets.

The Saint have much much more pressing needs than safeties this year.

You guys are morons, once Jones gets in the combine, he will be a late 1st or early 2nd pick. He has speed, power, instincts, and leadership. Yes the Saints, need a young safety -- we need a DE, DT, and LB more, however.
